Sega will trade exclusivity deal for Shenmue III funding

Monday, 1st February 2010 07:48 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Sega’s apparently said in the latest issue of Famitsu 360 that it would develop Shenmue III as a platform exclusive – provided the relative hardware manufacturer paid for it.

Specifically, according to “None of the previous games sold really well for the investment made, and SEGA is in doubt as to if it will resurrect the series. However, SEGA assured the fans that if there is some opportunity to revisit the series, they would love to do it.

“SEGA also mentioned the chance of one of the three hardware makers financing the game’s (Shenmue III) production in exchange for an exclusivity deal.”

Shenmue, despite being very dead for a very long time, will never die. A second game in Yu Suzuki’s ridiculous adventure-life-sim did make it to market for Dreamcast and Xbox; in 2001, 2002 and 2003.

The original released in 1999. At the time it was the most expensive game ever made, with an estimated budget of $70 million. It follows Ryo as he seeks to avenge his father’s death by waiting for buses and driving forklift trucks.

An online title in the series, the provocatively-named Shenmue Online, was announced as in development in 2004. Since its reveal, the game’s never been officially confirmed to be cancelled.

I’m pretty sure Sony wont be interested. They only fund IP’s they own and by the sound of it Sega are just asking for money in exchange for an exclusive contract. And thats Microsofts thing.

Why would any console manufacturer be interested in resurrecting a franchise that didn’t sell well?

I love the Shenmue series as much as anyone else, but nobody is going to throw away tens of million on something that wasn’t even a good seller in the first place.

You know what… I’m more inclined to thing that if anyone takes this offer it would be Sony.

They seem prone to making bad business decisions but at the same time keeping the niche fan bases happy.

what the hell would happen anyway, i remember the game went a bit crazy at the end of 2, if my memory serves correctly you ended up in a magical cave after walking slowly through a field for an hour, i remember this very well as we had a power cut and i had to redo the whole lengthy sequence

Nintendo should go for it. They want to re-capture the hardcore.

Get Sega to re-develop ports of the original two for Wii, and see how that goes.

    Or don’t.

Now that would be a gigaton there.

Iwata would be the saviour of hardcore gamers, gone from public enemy number one to the messiah. 8O

@1 I believe that’s the case with this one too
Sony’s strategy is a lot different than Microsoft’s

Sony is deeply involving first-party studios such as Insomniac and Naughty Dog. On the other hand, Microsoft has been pushing hard to secure multi-platform titles from other platforms and also have notoriously spent millions on both exclusive and timed-exclusive titles.

    as a Sony rep said

““Obviously, what we have to do is make sure that our business plan is adhered to and we have the amount of money to invest in games rather than investing in stopping other people making games and progressing. So I would much rather that we were investing money into making sure that we’ve got great R&D and we start producing games like LittleBigPlanet, rather than paying other people a huge amount of money to stop people playing their product.”

They need to reboot the franchise, start it over. Maybe then it would start selling look at Yakuza a very similar kind of game in JP for example.

    #20 5 years ago
  21. mington

wasn’t yakuza done by the same development team?

i don’t think a reboot is necessary, maybe just a flash back sequence to reignite the flames of hatred for Lan Di.

As Ryo leaves everything behind at the end of the first game and again at the end of the second game

“Wasn’t yakuza done by the same development team?”

i dont think so, Shenmue was done by Sonic Team. I’m not to sure who worked on Yakuza exactly but i’m pretty sure it wasnt them.

i think the world has moved on, with sandbox games like gta and yakuza and also the soon to be released story telling of heavy rain, i just think which ever way they’d take the franchise it’ll end up lacking

  25. Turrican2

Shenmue was done by Yu Suzuki’s team AM2 not by Sonic team.
Anyway the Yakuza Series is done by SEGA’s Amusement Vision team (former AM4 creators of games like Daytona or Manx TT).

They should just kill two birds with one stone and introduce Ryo into the Yakuza universe via 4/5. Also, thinking back to that Sega document, it did say something about bring Y3 over for marketing support, so Sony isn’t that apposed to shelling out for a good deal, just not at expense to other console owners.

    Also, I love QTEs.

@26 i was thinking just that, although i’m yet to play a yakuza game so i thought i’d hold my tongue.

    or a separate dlc episode!

  29. Gekidami

Isnt Yakuza based in current-day Japan whilst Shenmue is based in 1987? That would be an awkward tie-in to pull off. And at the end of Shenmue things started to get abit magicial, i’m pretty sure Yakuza isnt about that type of stuff so it would just be something that would bother Yakuza fans i’m sure.

  30. mington

That would be awesome, Ryo is now a washed up has been who gave up on his quest and became a drunk, he trains you in the art of fighting and forklift racing. Then when fighting against the yakuza boss (an ancient Lan Di) who kicks your arse and starts getting away on a helecopter, Ryo appears and blows up the helicopter with a fireball, i ejaculate in my pants

    game done

  32. AHA-Lambda

IF this did happen I would say that sony would be the most likely to do it but even then I don’t see how any first party could like the idea of entirely funding a 3rd party title especiaqlly shenmue.

IF this did happen they would need to rerelease shenmue 1 and 2 I think aswell. Although this could cement the idea of dreamcast games coming to PSN.

So IF this were made I would only then be interested IF they ported shemue 1 AND 2. That’s alot of ifs….
