Heavy Rain has “multiple plot paths to achieve”, says Sony

Sony has told CVG that players of Heavy Rain will have different experiences from one another, which it calls a “unique concept”.

“Heavy Rain is a pretty unique concept in so far as it is a large departure from the norm. The range of actions that the player controls is extremely diverse,” said Sony product manager Lucy Duncan.

“It throws down new gameplay challenges in that there are multiple plot paths to achieve the final outcome. In some situations you may actually lose one of the key characters.

“Now, we’re all used to just keeping on replaying that level so that character survives, but Quantic Dreams actually want you to move on.. and in so doing the story may unfold in a different, and perhaps more advantageous direction.”

“It’s going to be a real topic of conversation when two people complete the game but have had completely different experiences getting there,” she added.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this, and just because it as different endings doesn’t mean you should play it multiple times, according to David Cage, because doing so would “kill the magic”.

Also, if more than four players die, game over.

It’s out next month, and the demo gets released on February 11.

Indigo Prophecy had (I believe) four different endings… and I wonder if this will be around the same amount.

Blade Runner was interesting. As I recall that had quite a lot of different endings.

I got stuck REALLY early. But I loved it. I found it at car boot sale very late in the PSone (4th, 5th?) generation.

Why WOULDN’T you want to play through it again and make different choices just to see it play out differently?

Odd that the creator is discouraging this.

Becuase it will make the decisions transparent, and formulaic.

Knowing that will dissolve the effect the choices themselves, and the relevant outcome have or has.

I get it, but personally I want to see this new story branch technology in action. I want to be impressed knowing that something I decided to do hours ago, has effected the story sequence down the line. I’m curious as to how minor or major the changes are. I’ll go through it again multiple times for this reason.

That’s irrelevant though.

You asked why the creator didn’t want it, and it’s becuase he has worked to achieve that transparency.

Playing through it twice will ruin the initial impact, and instead make it a gimmick.

I am sure you know, I just wanted to demonstrate that it was inane :D

Should be interesting to see how it works out if that’s the case. Hopefully it wont be just that doll girl is there (for instance) and has a couple of lines, vs her being dead and not there.

I totally hear ya pud, but i still think the creator should be proud of the branching technology and ENCOURAGE people to play thorough multiple times to witness it first hand.

Kind of like, first i’m gonna play it normal, then I’m gonna play though it as an evil sonofabitch, just to see what changes. Test the technology. If it’s weak, that’s why he’s encouraging us not to.

Here’s an interview which confirms 20+ endings…a bit old but it’s interesting
He also says that if you lose all 4 characters there isn’t a”game over” but a very sad ending which is Cage’s personal favourite

It’s “game over” for the characters.

“When all of the characters die, the story ends – that’s quite a sad ending”

But luckily that wouldn’t happen until the “last third” of the game.

It’s all in the link up there in the post already.

Sorry Steph i didn’t see that there…no game over and no continues. If someone had his 4 characters die he’ll have his ending but if he wants to survive this…and see something different he has to play through it again from the beginning.

Where’s the 20+ endings info though?do i have to do all the work here? :P
just kidding

I’m really hopeful for this game, the QTEs don’t seem to intrusive and I couldn’t really care about them aslong as the story is good.

No harm zoop! :-)

If I like a game enough, I’ll play through one more time or two even, but I don’t know if I have the gumption, let alone the concentration to play through it 20+ times to get a different ending.

just like me,whichever -whatever game if i like it enough the best i can do is to play through it twice…no more.
But it’s good to know that there are other endings to motivate me IF i ever feel the urge to play it a third time
