Bungie’s said in the latest issue of Edge that Halo: Reach is 70 percent complete.
But the developer did insist in the newest issue of the magazine (via the EG forums) that no one area in the game is properly finished.
Some more details below on the shooter:
- There will be some massive surprises in the campaign.
- It’ll have huge landscapes: you could see a buddy of yours fighting a long distance away in co-op.
- The Mongoose returns, along with the addition of new vehicles.
- Night-vision from ODST returns.
- The Halo 3 engine was “gutted” for improvement, with no stone left unturned.
The developer also said it was taking hardware on 360 to its limit with Reach.
Yesterday, Bungie said in an interview with the magazine that the story in the game is like “Titanic.”
Earlier in the week, both new screens and a video from what appeared to be the open public beta was leaked.
The game’s due for a release this fall for 360.
Thanks, Mike.

Is that 70% in real terms or 70% in Polyphony Digital terms?

So much for Bungie not living off of the Halo franchise.
Didn’t they say they were going to stop doing it?
I’d like to see what they can do if they run with a new IP.

They said this is their last one. Then its in the hands of who every MS gives it to.
Johnny Cullen said:
Giga – I think we can safely say this is in real terms.
Eregol – ODST was meant to be their last title, but thanks to the Peter Jackson Halo project (not the movie) getting canned, they managed to find space for Reach.
But like Geki says, this will be their last title. IP gets handed off to 343 Industries, which was built just for Halo.

And Bungie will no doubt move on to do a completely different space marine shooter with a heavy multiplayer focus for the 360.
Gheritt White said:
Doubtful. I seriously doubt that Bungie’s next game will be an FPS at all, going by company history. They could well resurrect project Phoenix, as I do believe that was pretty close to Jason Jones’ heart.
The Hindle said:
I doubt Bungie will ever truely leave Microsoft though i think they will just go second party like Insominac are to Sony
AHA-Lambda said:
@ 3 – Thank god! I want to see what bungie can do that isn’t bloody halo!
Gheritt White said:
@ 7: Bungie left Microsoft Game Studios in 2007, so the shift now will be from what is ostensibly a second party to a truly independent dev.
I give it 12 – 18 month before they’re snapped up by a major third-party publisher.

Still Bungie and Ps3 just seems unlikely to me would be something if it happens

I can see them doing everything they can to avoid that.
AHA-Lambda said:
They may be independent now but I’m sure MS has some sort of contract/incentives for bungie to keep their games on 360
Gheritt White said:
@ 10: How about Oni? That was a PS2 exclusive developed by Bungie, so it’s not like they’re particularly averse to working with Sony.
AHA-Lambda said:
Times change I doubt after their success with MS I dont think they would want to back away from that ever.
Let’s face it bungie is important to MS, MS must be giving them major support more so than I can see sony ever giving them.

I would love to see Bungie try something else… it’ will prove if they really are a AAA studio.
I know that sounds harsh, but we’ve only ever had Halo to go off and excitement and enjoyment for those games can sometimes be directly linked to fan admiration.

@AHA-Lambda
Nah, if Michael Patcher is to be believed I’m sure Bungie regret ever signing a deal with MS!

I thought it was supposed to be a completely new engine?
that makes it sound more like a re-working.
Aimless said:
I think you’re approaching Theseus’ paradox there, sennasnit. Besides, there’s no point in starting from scratch for the sake of it.
onlineatron said:
They’ve overhauled the engine… but the recent screens looked worse that Halo 3.
Psychotext said:
It doesn’t work that way sennasnit. If it did, then there hasn’t been a new Windows since the first version. On the gaming side, it would mean that the Source engine wasn’t new either, it’s just the old Quake engine with some re-working. Same could be said for the Unreal engine too.
“but the recent screens looked worse that Halo 3.”
Ok… that’s just wrong. Unless you played a version of Halo 3 that no-one else has had access to.

‘Looked worse’
I’m not commenting on a technical level… just to me they looked bland palette wise and not what I expect from Halo.
Eregol said:
From the decals in the screenshots the other day this looks like it could be Doom, crossed with ODST crossed with Army of Two.
Bet there’ll be fist bumps and manly hugs throughout.

I’m just that much of a man… except, probably not any more.
