Video: Gran Turismo 5 vs Reality with side-by-side comparison

Thursday, 21st January 2010 19:20 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Polyphony Digital has released a video showing a side-by-side comparison of a lap done in Gran Turismo 5 with one in a real-life car.

The video is a tech demo showing off the Data Logger Visualization Technology, that enables developers to accurately track and recreate movements both the car and driver make for implementation within the game.

It’s rather cool, and we have it for you below the break.

Remember, the game’s 90 percent complete and will use 80 percent of PS3′s power.

    Pretty damn cool.

I’m not sure this is conclusive proof that GT’s physics are realistic (many say they’re not) but it’s cool none the less.

It has pretty much nothing to do with physics as far as I know since it just digitalizes how you drove in reality.

The Data Logger may not recreate the physics of the real car in the game but the way the car is reacting on the road in GT5 is pretty similar to how it reacts in real life.

They get a bit out of sync in places, and the GT5 replay doesn’t seem to show the full range of vehicle movement, but it’s pretty cool.

Of course, how relevant it ends up being depends on how many real tracks there are in the game.

I find realism in games to be boring.. every game is better with exaggerated realism. GT5.. pfft.. will be just as boring as the rest of the ones in this series.

@MushroomStamp: absolutely agree…realistic graphics would only be cool if placed in an unrealistc setting…so that it would change the´real´look of the world…otherwise it´s just boring as hell…can´t imagine a more unsexy place than the nürnburgring in this world…

you want to talk about realism, it does not any better than on the pc. Who ever said realism is not fun :P

    proof here

they have motion simlars for air plane games too

    some people build their own

here is another reason pc gaming is better than consoles

    for car games

this something you don’t get with racing car games on consoles

    @5 & 6
The only genre which is welcome to go in the extreme realistic direction is driving games. Everyone at some point wants to try out their own cars in a realistic driving game.

That’s too many Percentages Stephany. The two pints I had that were 4% equaled 8% so what percent of my brain is now not functioning?

Okay, so the tracks are just like in real world.

And about the graphics – they still look as real as this baloon chick that friends give ya’ during the party and tell ‘We think she likes you, her name’s GUM DIVA’.
Honestly, just look at it. I’m not demanding any super-uber technology, just something FM3 like.

    Woah… @ww3pl

Did you really just slate GT for it’s graphics? If there is one thing that GT5 will do well it will be the graphics.

I think the reality has better graphics than GT5…
