December NPD ’09 – Wii sells 3.8 million, PS3 edges 360

Amazing.
The latest NPD for the month of December 2009 has revealed Wii was the biggest hardware winner, with a staggering 3.8 million units sold
Last week, the company said they had sold over 3 million units of the console during the month.
To add on top of Wii’s success, DS also sold over 3.3 million units.
Meanwhile, PlayStation 3 edged Xbox 360 in the battle of the HD consoles.
PS3 sold 1.36 million units, while 360 sold 1.3 million.
For the rest, PSP sold 654k and PS2 sold 333k.
The data is below. Low and behold.
- Nintendo Wii – 3.81 million
- Nintendo DS – 3.31 million
- PlayStation 3 – 1.36 million
- Xbox 360 – 1.31 million
- PlayStation Portable – 654.7k
- PlayStation 2 – 333.2k
“There are a lot of hardware records this month,” stated NPD’s Anta Frazier. “The PS3 realized it’s biggest month of sales ever, and the first time sales have exceeded 1 million units.
“The Wii and the DS also had their biggest sales months ever, and in fact the two platforms hold the top two spots in sales of any hardware device in a single month. Overall, it was the biggest month of sales for hardware on both a dollar and unit basis.
“This current generation of console hardware has outsold the last by more than 9 million units during the first 50 months in the market.
“Hopefully, the big increase in the overall install base of hardware systems will bring good things for software sales in 2010, especially with the incredible line-up of content coming out early in the year.”

PSPgo numbers are mashed in with sales of the normal PSP.
So what you see above is a combo of sales of the PSP-3000 and PSPgo.

That’s another few ivory back scratchers.
Your Wii number in the table is wrong btw (you have the DS number in there)

I can just hear all those PS3 fanboys getting ready to pronounce the death of the 360 and say how they were right all along.
Wankers.

I can see Microsoft dropping the price if the Ps3 does this every month

I doubt Microsoft will be doing anything until Natal hits. They’re stuck with their strategy until then.

Is it safe to browse GAF yet, or do I still need some sort of protective armour.
Good results all round, nice to see Sony competitive in the States again too.

That’s a hell of a lot of consoles. But Jesus H at that Wii figure! That’s completely astonishing!
