Madness.

Activision has announced that Modern Warfare 2 has grossed over $1 billion since its launch back in November.

The Infinity Ward shooter grossed $550 million in its first five days.

The game was announced today to have been the biggest-selling game of 2009 in the UK.

“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has exceeded our expectations and shattered theatrical box office and video game records,” said ActiBlizz boss Bobby Kotick.

“There are only a handful of entertainment properties that have ever reached the $1 billion mark, which illustrates the power of the Call of Duty franchise and mass appeal of this game.”

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced today that Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues to set sell-through records crossing the $1 billion mark in retail sales worldwide since its launch in November, according to internal Activision estimates.

In its first five days alone, the game sold an estimated $550 million worldwide, outpacing five-day worldwide theatrical box office gross figures for such films as Avatar, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and The Dark Night, according to internal Activision estimates and boxofficemojo.com.

    Going to a movie: 9 dollars. MW2: 60 to 180 dollars.
So that box office quote is a bit nonsensical.

Where are all those comments by a certain poster about how this game was going to fail and that the backlash would be enormous?

No Russian out to buy this.

I’m not adding my money to Activision’s coffers for this.

Plus I don’t like FPS games.

    That’s a lot of money.

And while the box office comparison can’t be like for like, I wonder what percentage of each sale is returned to the producer as net profit. In other words, how many dollars have wound up in Activision’s coffers versus, say, Paramount for Transformers 2.
