Iwata: Next Nintendo handheld to have “ability to read movements”

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has mentioned first details of a possible new handheld from Nintendo: one that may not be a new DS SKU.
Speaking in an interview with The Asashi Shimbun (via Kotaku), Iwata only said this much on a new device:
“[It will have] highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing.”
Bar the multiple DS SKUs released so far, this is the first time Nintendo has talked about a new-new handheld in any form.
E3? Brace yourself.

The highly detailed graphics comment is interesting, it would be surprising if Nintendo made a handled solely for hardcore gamers. It’s probably an Arm CPU and PowerVR SGX GPU same as high end smartphones.
Actually I dont think Nintendo is in any danger yet from smartphones at least not until they become commodity items and sell for nothing so that will take a long time to happen but it is heading that way.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if the new Nintendo handheld was capable of better graphics then the Wii…

The chances of Nintendo ever making a machine ‘solely for hardcore gamers’ ever again are practically zero. We’ll be lucky if they support us by accident, never mind by design.
