GT5 demo – video of our incredible driving skills
Hit the link for a video of us doing two laps in the GT Academy Time Trial demo, which releases to the public in two days.
As you can see, if you were planning on seriously vying for a place in the Polyphony competition, you may as well forget it. We’ve got it wrapped up.

If you remember they did update the physics engine at least two times, that I can think of, to GT5P.

Yes, I believe I get what you are saying, Blerk – I should not unreasonably expect an almost generational leap between now and release date.
Anyway, really looking forward to this game! Still. But the finish line is in sight! They’re on the home straight! The chequered flag is – oh, you get the idea.

It’s hardly ‘disappointing’ in the visuals field though, is it?

The only ones who are likely to be disappointed are those who thought that the ludicrously good looking screenshots are what we’d actually end up playing.
…and they deserve to be, because they’re dumb.

Well, I did expect some sort of upgrade in graphics between GT5P and GT5. And the footage I’ve seen from the Tokyo circuit seemed to be just that. The footage from here however really does look exactly like Prologue. I don’t think it’s really unreasonable to have expected a noticeable boost in visuals in 2 years more development time – look at what Naughty Dog did in that time! That said, GT5 remains one of my most anticipated games. I loved GT4 (though I’d tried GT before, that was the first I’d bought) and after all it’s really about how the cars handle and the driving itself – and from what has been said, the physics engine is what has been worked on the most. Still, I haven’t experienced this yet myself, and videos on the internet are not the best way to judge, ultimately.. Looking forward to Thursday!

game looks as real as it can get. and people say it looks disappointing.. they are aiming for picture realism and not cartoon style NFS graphics.

@Armitage: Had they kept the same feature set as GT5P I’d agree. But as I said on the previous page, they’ve obviously added a hell of a lot since, so I’d wager it was a battle to keep graphics at the same level / performance… let alone improve them.

To be frank I’ve no interest in GT, but I don’t think it’s wise to judge a game’s graphical quality from a stripped down 200MB demo, especially when it still has a good few months left in development.
That is all.

@Psychotext & Aimless
Yep fair enough, furry muff.
Though here’s a link to the (admittedly off-screen) Tokyo footage I was on about before (which may explain why my expectations have been quite high):

As you’ve admitted, off-screen it is. And offscreen can do wonders in imitating the effects o ati aliasng and HDR. GT5 has superb HDR though.
ANYWAY, I expect we will see some more visually arresting tracks and cars, certainly when it comes to the rally parts.
And as Psychotext says, 60fps with a lot of other nonsense happening (just saw the in cockpi view with the wonderful driver animations) is an achievement in itself.

Someone’s posted some comparison shots with the real life track – seems extremely accurate at any rate:

The header states ‘video of two time trial laps in 350z’.
Aren’t they actually 370z’s as per the GT academy PR release? Doesn’t matter much, they look near on identical.
Persoanlly as an avid gt5p player and FM3 player, I’m a little disappointed by the graphics so far BUT I know from gt5p that it is better than this and at 200mb, how can you expect major textures? I’m not a game dev, maybe it should be possible but I’ll reserve judgement until gt5 release.
My only wish is for PD to improve their audio. After driving say 5.2 R8′s V10 etc in FM3, the noise is a little on the subtle side.

Even bearing in mind the benefits No_Pud mentioned of an offscreen vid, the Tokyo footage is a clear step up from the demo that’s been launched, which is proof in itself that better things await.
As has been said, it hardly looks disastrous anyway, but given the amount of showboating that’s been done of the game, it was maybe a little disingenuous to release the first playable footage of it in a graphically stripped down state. Be that due to the choice of track or limitations of the demo build.

No, this is what the Indianapolis track looks like. It has not been “stripped down” at all. It is an accurate model. GT5P had six courses in a 1.5GB download with 80 more cars. Filesize is basically irrelevant in this context.

Despite slightly improved but still rubbish driving, ranked 164th online. Can’t see that lasting…

I was actually impressed with the demo.
Content, or lack of, and damage aside, I liked it.

Definately new physics compared to gt5p. Though why does a tuned car drop its nose so much under braking?
A lot of oversteer but I really do like the noise of the engine/exhaust. It has got a lot of character. the tyre noise, not so much.
My times are rubbish, I’m only ~4k ranking but it is not too bad. I feel graphically a step down from gt5p.
The videos of live in game footage from gamescom etc was better than this, remember the ferrari/lambo videos. I feel that this demo isn’t fully loaded. but hey I’ll still play FM3 until launch.

You cant judge the game till you have it on your Tv sg, plus havnt PD said this is from GTp code not Gt 5.
Edit its GT5 code but its point is to show how the cars feel according to IGN.
