360 MW2 is biggest selling game in the US this year

modernwarfare22

According to NPD data, the 360 version of Modern Warfare 2 is the biggest selling game in the US this year. Shock.

Nintendo pretty much owns the rest of the 2009 top 10, with only the 360 version of Madden and ODST making a dent. Not a single PS3 game made the list.

  1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (360)
  2. Wii Fit (Wii)
  3. Wii Sports Resort (Wii)
  4. Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
  5. Wii Play (Wii)
  6. Halo 3: ODST (360)
  7. Pokemon Platinum (DS)
  8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3)
  9. Madden NFL 10 (360)
  10. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii)

I’m assuming you mean no PS3 exclusives made the list as Modern Warfare 2 for PS3 is at No.8

Sony have some serious problems when it comes to selling thier games, i mean they sell respectable but Uncharted 2 is game that deserves 6m in sales not 2m. Dam Sony.

Sony simply haven’t released their usual big sellers in the US yet – kind of very stupid. God of War, GT and a proper Socom would have done big numbers for them, but who am I to question why they haven’t managed to release these on PS3 yet.

Uncharted 2 does deserve the plaudits, but the big sales numbers? It’s not really the right genre for it. That said this is exactly why I still like Sony, they put money into these sort of projects where the projected sales are never going to match the bigger blockbusters in the big genres.

Here is the thing. This is the way it is going to be this gen. It is the way it has been all along. Its nothing new to me personialy. Mt fav systems have been the TG16/TDuo, Saturn, Dreamcast, and Xboxone. I always seem to enjoy the most, the system that offers something different. I find myself the type that doesn’t always enjoy the most mainstream, over hyped offerings out there. I never got into RE, Tomb Raider, or FF. Instead I like Bonk, Gaurdian Hereos, and Phantasy Star. I am a gluten for 2D shooters, fighters, and side scrollers. This gen, very burnt out on the CoDs, Halos, Gears, and countless other shooters. I enjoy the unique offerings from Sony. Seems strange to say that really, the last two gens were spent for me loathing them.
And that brings me to you. To the many of you that can’t understand the position Sony finds themself in with the PS3 now. You may never have been here in your gaming lives. Your last. On the global scale of things your fav video game system is last. It doesn’t bother me at all. If Sony wewre first they wouldn’t be breaking their backs trying to offer you unique things to play. Instead of Halo we would be drowning in Resistance or KZ or Haze, or any other game that Sony would be promoting as the Halo Killer. We might not even have had an UC game to begin with. If Sony were leading all we would still be stuck with poorly done jp games. Things have changed. Some for the better, some not. All in all I like it. Why? Because the days of JP dominate games are behind us. That btw, is my single biggest reason for Sonys demise. They relied way too much in the past on JP support. But in recent times, JP went to the handheld, and Sony was left out to dry. I like online, I like western game devs. I am a little tired of online western shooters tho lol. But some amazing gems out there, from downloadable stuff to full retail games. Western Gems. Gems that never would have made it on a JP Dominated Sony run games market. From Trine to Fat Princess to Flower and much more. I have to say I like it.
You? You, VG247 Sony loyalist, just need to recongize the reality of it. The writting is there on the wall. That ain’t roses your smelling. Even with this holiday push, even with some of the biggest name games sony has had this gen, the PS3 is going to remain last. If that matters to you, and it shouldn’t(I own 85 Sega Saturn games and 100plus Dreamcast ones), then maybe your more of a fare weather fan then you thought. If it is just the games, go buy em, play em. It doesn’t matter what system they are on afterall. If it is more then that to you, then hang in there and look for gems. Most of the big name games are multiplatform anyways. Trust me, your really not missing out on xb360 exclusives, most are trash or at least overhyped/overrated.
Just get used to seing a Nintendo and MS dominated sales chart. Its not a big deal. Is it?

‘Fair’ weather, not ‘fare’, unless you’re paying for some kind of cooling precipitation. I apologise, I’m just as pedantic as I am petulant, but I don’t care, so there.

Its ironic isn’t it? I am published auther, yet I have no grasp on writting mechanics and gramer, well we won’t even go there. All I can say is one, thank god for spell check and editors. And two, being a video game forum/website, I ain’t spell checking a damn thing ;P

Seems a bit weird to see ODST outselling the PS3 version of Modern Warfare 2.

Also kind of strange to see the mix of game ages – some of the titles were released literally a few weeks ago, while others are actually years old.

Must be Holiday sales Blerk. But your right it does seem odd that SMBWii is on the same list as Mario Kart and ODST.

Sonys demise really? 6m behind and thats a demise really? I agree with Drdam more then you Oldergamer the 360 has had a year head start of the Wii and the Ps3 yet is only just outselling the Ps3 and is way behind the Wii.

Microsofts reliance on Halo or fps basically is why they have never been able to sell big numbers with thier consoles. Lack of variety. Yeah Sony aint going to win this generation thats a fact but last place hmm who knows.

Globally last again i aint sure, i mean Microsoft are dead in Japan whilst Sony do 50k a week, Europe who knows with Europe and Usa there is 100k between them

It’s really all about perception TH. Sony have gone from outselling its competitors nearly three to one (combined) to scrapping for second place. That’s aside from losing around 5 billion dollars and looking like they’ll be lucky to sell a third of what they sold with the PS2.

It’s not really particularly hard to see why people think Sony have fallen a long way… when you’re looking at how they’ve done in the past.

True PT and its for those reasons the 360 should be way ahead of the Ps3 but it isnt

I never cease to be surprised at others suprise at US sales split across PS3/360.

Does no one understand market share and demographics anymore? Or the simple concept that once a fair bit of a market has been owned (i.e. most of the potential audience for Uncharted 2, MW2 on PS3, etc. already own a 360 and are committed to that platform in the US) you’re not magically going to see something sell similar on another platform just because its in the same popular genre.

So far this gen is looking pretty clear:

Wii first everywhere

PS3 second in Japan and very probably Europe in the not too distant future

360 second in US and third in Japan and very probably Europe in the not too distant future

As for worldwide finish, still looks like Wii first, but second place WW is still open depending on how much ground PS3 makes up in Japan and elsewhere to offset 360 gains in US.

So the big winner vs previous position is Nintendo, the big loser is Sony and the doing well from where they started is MS.

Simple, ‘innit.

What PT said. And Hindle, it is. You just need to figure out where and what your comparing. And in what region. PS3 looks good in JP, looks alright in EU. Looks plan bad in NA. And are you talking about hardware or software. I was comenting on this articale/post/ Its about Software. PS3 is way behind in that catagory. It is what it is.
Lastly when someone points out something you see a bad about the PS3, its not a personal attack. Not even a PS3 attack in this case. Mostly its fact, with a splash of gamer opinion.

“True PT and its for those reasons the 360 should be way ahead of the Ps3 but it isnt”

I don’t follow your logic. The 360 has already outsold its predecessor by a significant amount, and will likely double its sales (or come close) by the time the generation is over. Its relative performance compared to the PS3 doesn’t really factor into the discussion for numerous reasons… but not least because it’s not the follow up to a 140m selling console and it’s got very little to do with why the PS3 faltered.

Oh i know it aint an attack OG just your opinion and yea software it maybe bad but is it such a suprise to you to see a fps doing well on a console that is pretty much the Fps box OG

The 360 is the platform that really shouldn’t have succeeded, given the haste with which it was rushed to market and the multitude of problems that beset it from launch. The fact that they got anywhere at all with it is nothing short of remarkable.

Not a suprise at all really, Hindle. Thats one of the things I like about PS3 and Sony in this gen. They offer more then just FPS. And when it comes to big name multiplatform FPS games, they have those too. Kind of a win – win if ya ask me. PS3 is home to some amazing games.

PT i dont follow yours either i was debating with OG about his views on the Ps3 and how he thinks Sony will finish last when they are only 6m behind thier nearest rival. The 360 has done way better and has proved it can provide a rival to the Playstation.

But yeah looking at that list, i dont know how Nintendo do it, all credit to them i mean Mario kart how is that still selling. As for the battle for second place it wouldnt suprise me Nintendo somehow won that as well :)

I see. Well, for what it’s worth, I don’t think the PS3 will be 3rd by the end of the generation… though the difference between 2nd and 3rd place will be in the millions rather than the 10s of millions.

As for being ~6m behind. That’s roughly the amount they were behind on the day the PS3 launched, so not a great deal has changed. (By my calculations, the 360 was at 7 million by the start of November 2006, and the current difference is 6.5m)

The continued success of the slim should mean that figure is about a million closer next time we see the figures released though.

The reason I feel that way Hindle is because I think that by the time the PS3 catches up in key markets, the competition will move on to new platforms. I wonder how long before we start seing the next xbox and nintendo systems being teased? Not too sure what Zii is yet, if anything. I think that this gen is going to be over before Sony would like, and before Sony get a firm grasp of being first. And I don’t think they will ever match the Wii numbers. So its not really first, more a distant 2nd really. I hope next round of hardware Sony makes a cheaper, easier to program system. And to all hardware manifactureers, they had better make plans for implementing full BC(interms of disc based games, but also BC DLC – I don’t want to lose my PSN/XBLA games), and some sort of Cloud based gaming service. My twitchy knee tells me that this next gen of hardware could be the last one in the traditional sense. After that? I see dumby consoles that rely on Cloud based style services to stream games in ala Sega Channel of yesteryear.

Some very nice graphs and analysis of the state of the US software market over at Gamasutra today.

Microsoft might not be winning the hardware race, but they’ve certainly turned the software one around.
