VGAs – Halo: Reach trailer shows engine, new armour

haloreach

Hit the link for the first Halo: Reach trailer, which debuted last night at the Spike VGAs.

Looks as though Bungie’s gone for the “beefy” look this time round, armour-skulls and all.

Quite hard not to be excited about this, to be honest. Even if it does feel a little “Army of Two”.

It’s out next year. Get all the rest of the show news from Steph’s liveblog.

Keighley has overhyped once again.

That said, it actually looked good. I hope the gameplay itself looks decent.

Yeah, the way they were building this up I was expecting some actual in-game stuff, not just a few cut-scenes (apparently) rendered in their new engine. I take it this one’s going to be more squad-based than the original games, then?

Apparently Blerk, “squad-based combat dynamic” Just like the leak said.

Johnny, I don’t think any of the FPS Halo games disappointed gameplay-wise, why should Reach be an exception?

This game is my bet for GotY 2010 contestant and so far that bet looks safe and sound :D

“This game is my bet for GotY 2010 contestant and so far that bet looks safe and sound”

safe and sound? your narrow mindness is an eye opener

Why? Do you have any valid objections that Halo: Reach will be a *contestant* for GotY 2010 coming from this trailer? Can we hear them or are we all “narrow minded”?

“new engine? where?! looks same as halo 3″

A lot of the stuff in that trailer doesn’t even look like it’s going to be possible on the 360… so no. Unless you mean it has a Spartan and some warthogs in it, in which case, yes.

We all know that cinematic trailers, even when produced with the in-game engine, never show final gameplay graphics.
So judging from this teaser-trailer “Halo Reach” will definitely not look much better than Halo 3.

Will probably still buy this game because I always liked the gameplay mechanics and the interesting enemy-AI. And I skipped ODST, so no HALO over-saturation for me at least.

I’m not sure that’s a particularly logical conclusion. We’ve got a trailer here which looks far better than the Halo 3 “in engine” trailer they did (the tech is barely comparable)… so surely it stands to reason that the game could look much better, even after the expected step down.

That’s of course assuming we can take them at their word, and this has been done like the Halo 3 trailer we got.

Digital Foundry just tweeted it’s nto realte nd even Gametrailers says In-Engine.

And if Uncharted 2 is anything to go by In-Engine and In-Game are VASTLY different. So lets see how it goes. Looked much better from off-screen footage.

@ Psychotext
Sure, Reach will look better than Halo 3. Question is: How much better? My guess is: Not much, because since Halo 3 most developers have also learned a lot about post-processing and tweaking in-game cinematics.

Well, obviously we don’t know and as stated we’re just going to have to see how it goes. I guess the first glimpse will be how the beta looks.

Even that is multiplayer and a beta, so I’d say thats unfair.

I just ate some steak that tasted like washng up liquid.

Cjamces are high, that it will look better than Halo 3/ODST though, which I think the series deserves.

Same shit different name. This one will suck balls just like Halo 3 and ODST. LMFAO, U will buy this and continue to be a good bitch for M$. (jk) I hope this isn’t like the others. I lost my faith in halo on the 3rd one. ODST didn’t do much for me either. I’ll wait for gameplay footage to give my full pov.

heh. I wonder what the reaction would’ve been if it was Uncharted/Killzone 3. I’m sure that’s fine with you guys, right? No.one moans about Gran Turismo 5, along with Prologue and all the other recent spin-offs. Tragic double standards.

Anyway, looks promising. As has been said, I’d've liked to’ve seen some in-game footage, as well knowing just what the game is about.

Still, Marty knows his music. Bombastic.

At least it show Bungie have figured out how to animate cut scenes finally. And to make people look like people.

They still can’t do faces very well, god bless the helmet. I think it looks lovely, let’s hope it carries through to the game, but the main important factor for me is that it plays like the others.

I’m still silently crying for wasted steak. Tut and tut again.

Well, as Psycho said, if this trailer was in-engine – like the first Halo 3 trailer – then we’ve got a leap in quality. If it isn’t, well, then we can’t tell if there’s a new engine or not.

Need more info, basically.

#33

Freek

They haven’t faked anything in the past, and this game does look like what you would expect from a 360 title, so why question it?

Mike
13/12/09, 7:00 pm

I’m sure the cut-scene us in the game, but I doubt it looks as good when you’re playing it.

Freek, I suggest you watch the Halo 2 reveal trailer. Followed by the Halo 3 reveal trailer. You might start to notice that Bungie’s “in-engine” trailers have a tendency to look, shall we say, aspirational.

#36

Mike
13/12/09, 7:40 pm

The Halo 3 trailer looked exactly the same as the finished product.

#37

Psychotext
13/12/09, 7:47 pm

Well… no, there was a significant amount more AA in it, and they changed the texture and colour of MC’s armour. They did show the game running that way in an early multiplayer test, but it wasn’t the same thing we got in the end.

#38

Mike
13/12/09, 7:52 pm

Well, I stand well and truly corrected. :)

To be clear I don’t doubt Bungie’s technical ability, I’m just pointing out that they have a tendency to put forward something of a best case scenario in their early trailers. Maybe if they hadn’t decided to implement HDR in the way that they did Halo 3 would have run at proper 720p with a lovely dose of anti-aliasing, who can say?

Apart from the rather excessive AA there’s nothing in the Reach trailer that looks beyond the realms of possibility. The characters probably wouldn’t be quite so detailed in actual gameplay, but it’s pretty common practise for games to switch in higher quality assets for cutscenes.

Looks promising, the graphics still look dated though but its just a teaser.

Halo games always have pretty good gameplay as a rule but I hope they do something either with the story or introduce some new mechanic to the gameplay because it’s getting a bit long in the tooth now.

Halo 3 was a marginal improvement over Halo 2 but Halo 1 had something and I’d like them to capture the mystery that I felt in the first game. It would seem that with each version of Halo it is becoming more and more like ‘American Space Marines kick ass!’ (again).

I’ve not played ODST tho’ yet… I believe that it’s a step in the right direction.

Oh and Multiplayer doesn’t interest me anymore, I had that beaten out of me many moons agon in Halo 2 rumble pit.

BTW: I’m callin BS on that trailer being what we can expect on 360 (I reckon that was ‘in-engine’ but on a PC with the AA turned up)… still, it looks promising… the palette looks a bit mute tho’… hope they don’t go too far with the Killzone look (Halo was never about dull colours).

I haven’t played Halo since the original, so maybe I’m missing a little update in the gallery of characters, but all I could think watching that is “HOLY SHIT – DID THOSE GUYS JUST SHAMELESSLY RIP OFF GHOST FROM MODERN WARFARE 2?!”

What’s with the cranial balaclavas and space helmets all of the sudden?

For all the money being thrown at the games industry, they should seriously start bringing in some creative talent that hasn’t been lobotomized. It’s just getting ridiculous playing the same anonymous, streetsmart, orphaned archetype over and over again.

#45

Psychotext
13/12/09, 9:06 pm

@41: I think they may choose to wander down the Killzone road. The muted colour palette certainly helps the game look a lot better, and I bet they’ll be using copious amounts of lens flare and having dust blowing around wherever possible.

@44: There was a similar thing in ODST… and I believe that some of the Spartans in the books took to rather more “eccentric” uses of armour.

And not only that Mike, but the disinction betwen in-engine and in-game is massive.

In engine means things aren’t rendered in real-time necessariy. Just means that the engine doesn’t do DX11 fur shading for example, or parallax mapping.

It still means the resolution, passes of AA, shadow map resolution, and the lighting quality can all be much higher.
