Greenberg: Reach, not GT5, will win 2010

haloreachlogo

Halo: Reach will be the biggest game of 2010, Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg’s assured Gama, and not Polyphony’s GT5.

“Is it launching next year?” he joked of the racer.

“I’ve seen years and years of mini-games, but I haven’t seen that the game is done. They just released the PSP version – maybe that’s what they’ve been working on. I feel confident that there’s nothing that will compare in size. Halo: Reach will be the biggest game of 2010.”

Reach is expected towards the end of next year: GT5 is slated for a March launch in Japan.

Thanks, EG.

Sorry for lack of updates. Mrs Pat had an operation yesterday and one of the little Pats had to go to the doctor this morning with an ear infection. Doing my best.

No problem, Pat. Family goes first.
Hope all the Pats will be fine again for Christmas.

What exactly does it mean to be the “biggest game”? There’s so many ways you could interpret that I’m sure Reach will qualify in some capacity.

Seems a bit rich to knock a long development time on one game with another game that has no released *game* information (or footage) and no release date either for the one he’s championing. Also Mr Greenberg should perhaps consider Alan Wake and Magna Carta 2 before mocking games with long development times on rival platforms.

As #6 points out “biggest” is conveniently open to interpretation too. Biggest sales? Biggest content (not that GT5 appears to be slender on content. And perhaps APB should be considered in the definition too). Biggest marketing spend?

And why is Mr. Greenberg coming out so aggressively in this manner when he could be crowing about NPD. I hear the best form of defense is attack.

Anyway, chances are Wii Fit+++ will be the most succesful game of 2010.

Greenberg is the reason i hope Microsoft dont win, at least Sony have givien up thier arrogant ways and again they had something to be arrogant about selling 100m consoles with thier first attempt.

Are you insane? Man, for PS2 (and installed base is more than 100m) GT 3: A-Spec sold 14m; you think with me: the installed base of PS3 is 25m, so GT5 will sell something around 4 or 5 millions. Halo: Reach will sell around 8 or 10 m.

Sony is arrogant. The Polyphony’s director is fucking arrogant. Don’t be fanatic. Be realistic. Microsoft and Sony wants MONEY. Just that. Don’t be romantic. That’s the reality of the world.

I don’t think it’s quite as clear cut as that ricardolessa (edit – damnit, re post #13). Game sales don’t generally scale linearly with installed base, though arguably GT5 would scale better than most as it has a lot of casual appeal.

I doubt it’ll outsell any of the old GT games, but it certainly has a chance of pulling in something like 8 million.

Maybe you be right, Psychotext. Maybe. But GT5 sells more than Halo: Reach? Halo: ODST (a low-budget game, made for Bungie’s B team) sold 2 millions in two days. Halo: Reach (huge budget, new graphic engine) will be (like the others Halos) a phenomenon.

Halo 2 sold 8,5 m. Halo 3 (and the installed base of X360 was lower than nowadays) sold 10m. And Halo: Reach? 10m? 12m?

Don’t be dense.

PT never claimed that GT5 would sell more… he just stated it had ever chance of selling 8m.

@Blerk

Agreed, I know it’s not a continuation of Master Chiefs story… but it seems odd they would name it Reach.

It will give unknowing consumers the impression it’s a spin off akin to Halo Wars rather than a prequel.

Still… they changed ODST’s name late in the dev cycle so you never know.

Years and years of minigames? What? If he wants to start pointing fingers at GT5 Prologue, can’t Sony just point at ODST and ask why an “expansion” was charged at full price?

I don’t think either game will win 2010.
MS are way into their prick phase now and need to get their heads out of their asses if they want to keep their lead over Sony.
Only Kaz Hirai says stupid stuff for Sony. Everyone at Microsoft seems to have their cunt mouth on.

It’s kind of dull that they keep going back to Halo whenever they try to prove this point. If they hadn’t noticed, the Sony product they’re ultimately comparing against in each case has been different each time. Different series, different genre. Variety, Microsoft. It’s the spice of life.

And Halo’s a bit shit.

FPS 360/PS3 exclusives.

360: Halo…(any more?)

PS3: Killzone, Resistance, Haze

@Mike

That’s down to Sony’s desperate/foolish struggle to create a Halo beater.

But you can’t deny that Sony’s consoles always provide a better variety in gameplay styles.

Whilst Eregol was wrong to say ‘first person shooter’ it’s true most of Microsoft’s exclusives are shooters.

Hmm… lets see.

360: A fine FPS series.

PS3: A near fine FPS series, a decent FPS series and a jackshit FPS game.

360 wins, obviously.

Far Cry Instincts: Predator
Perfect Dark Zero

But yeah, maybe a little bit wrong about FPSes

You mean Gears and Halo are shooters. Halo Wars is RTS, Mass Effect and Fable are RPGs, Alan Wake is action/adventure. Forza is Driving, and then there’s those pony quiz games.

The only thing MS can’t do is platformers. Dunno why, but they just can’t do ‘em.

The whole ‘you can only get shooters on 360′ argument is basically dead in the water when you consider that 90%+ of the games released get ported to both platforms. So if it was true for one then it would equally have to be true for the other.

That said, I think Sony do a better job with their first-party stuff. Microsoft does have a better variety mix than they used to have, but Sony still give the impression that they have a better mix.

Gt P sold 4m copies and that was bascally the same kind of thing as Halo Odst. And ill point out it sold 4m copies when the Ps3 install base was ony like 19m. Id say Gt 5 will easly do 10m as Gt sells quite a lot in Japan.

If MW2 only did 1.87m in the US, month 1 (see NPD data today), then GT5 isn’t getting anywhere near that. And whoever said it’ll reach 10m sales WW is dreaming. There are only 25m PS3s or so worldwide – no way more than 1 in 3 people will buy it.

Halo: Reach will outsell GT5, no doubt, but then MS does have far more consoles in circulation, and FPSs always sell more than racers, no matter how big.
