Report – 3D gaming to reach 40 million by 2014
A new Insight Media study has claimed 40 million 3D-capable displays are expected to be installed worldwide by 2014.
The 2009 Stereoscopic 3D Gaming Report drew its conclusion after speaking to developers, publishers and gamers.
“We have spent considerable time on our forecasting methodology and believe we have created something that is truly new, innovative and ground breaking,” said Insight Media boss Chris Chinnock.
“We have played Stereoscopic 3D games for hundreds of hours and can report that the latest technology does not result in eye strain or fatigue,” added Dale H Maunu, the report’s lead analyst.

By 2013, the 20 million who did have 3D gaming, will have lost their glasses.
It’s a an ever diminishing install base.

Whatever the number will be I won’t be one of them unless my current TV breaks and 3D TV are cheap.

One day we’ll end up having 3D retinas.

If I say increasingly ridiculous things, and then accuse you of contrarianism each time, you’ll eventually have to agree with something preposterous.

All new TV’s in 3 years time will run at 120hz (or whatever the figure is) to allow for 3D gaming
Sky are releasing a 3D box in the next couple of years
As with the recent surge in cinema, and a lot of old films apparently being converted into 3D
The tech is not going away, i think it’ll be nice as an added extra in games, the ability to play in 3D
i think coupled with Natal, 3D could be pretty cool

“In the next step in the Sky+HD journey, Sky today announced that it will launch the UK’s first 3D channel next year. The channel will offer a broad selection of the best available 3D programming, which is expected to include movies, entertainment and sport. The service will be broadcast across Sky’s existing HD infrastructure and be available via the current generation of Sky+HD
set-top boxes. To watch 3D, customers will also require a new ’3D Ready’ TV, which are expected to be on sale in the UK next year.”

“We were shown demos of Killzone 2 in 3D (awesome) and even managed to have a play with Gran Turismo in another dimension.”

I think Sony are pushing this mainly read somewhere 3d features heavily in thier 2010 plans. Imagine Uncharted 3 with motion controls plus 3d, Naughty Gods would pull it off

The “Hmm” wasn’t at you Pud. It’s at this pulled out of thin air figure for 3D displays, which at first glance appears to be taken from saying that x displays are sold per year and for each year between now and 2014, x of them will be 3D capable.
The “sales summary” sounds pretty pathetic too:
“After reviewing our forecast methodology, one of the leading display makers in the world called it, ‘the most compelling forecast methodology we have ever seen,’ so we feel we are on the right track.”
“We spoke directly with gamers, game developers, and game publishers as well as display makers to build a complete picture of the future of gaming, along the way going from skeptical middle-age display veterans to 3D gaming fanboys.”
In fairness though, their conservative guesstimate seems much more realistic (~6m displays), but conservative guesstimates don’t make good headlines.

you maybe right hindle, but I see a big push toward them moving the tech in tvs, just as the ps3 was a trojan horse for blu-ray, so will it be the same for 3d tvs….XBR 15′s FTW!

I quite liked the Nvidia 3D games they had at the Eurogamer Expo, Batman: AA seemed to work quite well, as did which ever racer they had on display.
Technology is catching up and more usable but it’s also the same thing holding it back. I don’t want to have to buy a new monitor or TV, then glasses as well.
With 3D, Natal and all these other styles of playing games, I wonder just how many “innovative” ways we actually need =/

Does anyone actually want 3D TV? It always seems like one of those technologies which make me say “wow, that’s kind of cool” but then have no desire to actually pursue any further.

well I always upgrade my XBR’s every 5 generations. If 3d tech is in the XBR 15 then I guess it will be a bonus. Gaming is fine just the way it is.
