Total War studio pushing on with console development

viking3

Total War developer Creative Assembly’s doing more stuff on 360 and PS3, as proven by the studio’s ongoing search for cross-platform staff.

“The successful applicant will be interested in all things graphics related and work as part of the team developing all aspects of a game specific engine for 360, PS3 and PC,” says this graphic programmer ad.

Here’s another. This one’s for a lead engine programmer: “The successful applicant will lead a team developing all aspects of a game specific engine for 360, PS3 and PC with a view to extending the tech to ‘next next’ gen consoles.”

CA’s console efforts haven’t been especially well received to date, with sci-fi RTS Stormrise managing 48 percent on MC for its 360 version (51 percent for PS3), and the earlier Viking: Battle For Asgard taking 65 and 68 for PS3 and 360 respectively.

The outfit’s next announced game is Napoleon: Total War on PC, slated for February.

Thanks, CinemaBlend.

To be fair Viking was pretty good. Maybe not in some sort of technical achievment/benchmarking type of things. It was hohum in that dept. But where it actualy counted, fun. It was pretty good. I didn’t play stormrise. Console RTS games kinda of scare me.

Yeah I agree, Viking was a fun game. Wasn’t the greatest action game ever, but it was enjoyable time. Stormrise I was looking forward to, but clearly the ball got dropped, though I’m still hopefully that CA can turn out a good RTS for consoles at some point.

Oh and they also did Spartan: Total Warrior, which has an average Metacritic score of 73, but is actually a rather good action game. It just happened to come out in 2005 after God of War which meant it got badly over looked I think.

i loved Spartan: Total Warrior and enjoyed Viking, to me it felt like Viking needed another few months in development

i’d like to see them do that ‘loads of bad guys/huge battles’ idea but wrap it in an Diablo-esque RPG enviornment

Viking was great but far too fiddly when it came to the actual fighting. I’d like to see ROME make it to a console in some way, even if it’s akin to Viking.

I like games like that. Hack and slash old school flavoured games. Toss in a bit of leveling and char development, and I am in. I miss games like Champions of Norath, Dungeon and Dragon Heros, Phantasy Star Online, heck I would be giddy for a well done Gauntlet game.
