Side quests in Mass Effect 2 contain “handcrafted gameplay”

BioWare’s Casey Hudson has told VideoGamer that side quests in Mass Effect 2 will have a sense of variety, as if the gameplay were “handcrafted”.
“When you find mission[s] out there in the uncharted worlds, there are always missions where something special happens, and you get really good handcrafted gameplay and art that you can’t see elsewhere in the game,” he said. “I think people will find them to be really rewarding, really rich, because there’s something different around every corner.”
He also talked a bit about the mini-games you will play to get resources off the planets.
“Instead of having to drive around on a planet in the vehicle as a mission, where you’re just really picking up rocks and having to jump out and do that kind of stuff, now it’s part of a really cool planet exploration mini-game where you’re spinning the planet around underneath you, you can feel with the controller rumbling, you can hear the sound of anomalies and resources being picked up by your sensors and close in on them and send space probes. So that part is a lot more interesting.
“Running around and getting resources is now in a cool mini-game instead of you doing it on foot.”
The interview spans eight pages through the link, so go do your business before settling in for it.

Nice I always thought driving around each square inch of retardedly over mountainous terrain and driving at 75 degree angles was a little ridiculous and not exactly fun after the 30th time. hopefully the mini game isnt too repetitive and time consuming.

If I hadn’t played the first one on 360 and therefore have an old save I want to carry on, I’d get this on PC.

Well, there isn’t a month left. There’s (almost) two.
Edit: Curse your edit, onlineatron! Now I have to contribute something else…
Mass Effect 2 looks like a neat videogame.
Sorted.

My hype for this cant get any higher at the moment, i mean the first game was good but had some flaws. This looks like its the game ME was described as.

One of the biggest flaws of the first were those god awful cut and paste bases on planets. I really hope they’ve fixed that.
Some of the side quests were fairly unique… but it meant nothing when you were moving through generic base 9 for the fifth time.

This game is so neat, that it makes my pants neat.
…That doesn’t even make any sense…

Yeah, the prefab bases were the most disappointing bit of the game… apart from the frame-rate. Good job the rest of the game was so full of awesome.

If you read the article, nothing spoilerish, Casey talks about how they look at the community and the reviews for the first one and now they have a better idea on how to make the trilogy better. They looked at all the flaws and improved them few of them were the exploring quests like some of you mentioned and the framerate.
He was saying while they were developing Mass Effect they weren’t sure of the capabilities of the 360 because it was not out so they were kinda going blind folded, now they have a better feeling for the system.
Just from reading the article, I have a lot more confidence for the sequel then I did before.

Day 1 purchase for me. No doubt about it. The first was absolutely brilliant even with its vehicular flaws and side mission grinds. The universe they crafted and story as a whole was engrossing and the characters were interesting and charming. I hope that the increased party banter from Dragon Age carries over to ME2 because some of that dialogue was hilarious.

Wonder would you need to play the original first?
I just dont seem to have the time to get through so many good games out there.
Not a bad complaint I know.

Reask: It’s recommended that you do get through the first before, not only because you will know more of the story, but because you can also load your old savefiles and change some points in the story (some things will change based on what you did in the first).
If you do play through it, keep the exploration of the planets to a minimum, only go to marked places and only do the sidequests, you should go through it in a whizzy.
If you really want to get into the story I can recommend the two Mass Effect pocket books, the first one acts as a prequel to Mass Effect 1 and the second might act as a pre-prequel to Mass Effect 2.
