Brink – First proper gameplay movies show mission, killing, greatness

brink3

Bethesda’s released the first proper gameplay movies of Splash Damage’s Brink, as you can see after the break.

The videos show a mission seen at various shows this year, in which a team of accented gunmen assault a rebel stronghold. It’s serious business.

There’s a lot to see in there. Dev boss Paul Wedgwood is playing, and is seen switching classes and gear and various situations arise. You’ll also get to see just how detailed the environments are, and a general taste of the overall presentation: suffice to say, it’s not shit.

Bethesda said yesterday that Brink will release late next year for PC, PS3 and 360.

To go from Quake Wars to this is nothing short of an internal revolution at splash damage. Quake Wars was hardcore to the max and very rigid. This looks amazing, runs smooth and flows very well, with a lot to help players out to find something to do in the game. The online/offline aspect seems like a great idea and the animation and gameplay look amazing.

I was a big fan of Splash Damage before, but this is just on another level to Quake Wars.

This is the demo I saw at EG Expo on a cinema screen. I was honestly knocked out. Got everything crossed for it.

I read the big feature in last months edge on it, sounds a lot like what we’re seeing here. I was going to go to it at EG but decided that I only wanted to go to one and that ended up being Heavy Rain, which was a fantastic presentation.

Seems like they put all those new hires to good use here. You can definitely see the impact the Fable 2 designer has had on the game. And they appear to have hired animators now! I swear Quake Wars had like 4 frames of animation. Best thing is, it’s the same engine as Quake Wars and Wolfenstein 2009 :P

There’s a bunch of Killzone 2 in there, I reckon. It’s got K2′s producer on it.

The lighting looks good as far as I can tell.

Oh, and the player seems to teeny tiny skips and hops at the beginning instead of walking like men shaped like a cube. :)

Killzone’s Producer with Fable’s Director.

They have a dream team brewing over at Splash Damage.

Call me mad, but I’m not seeing what the fuss is here…

Hum, well i have to admit that in terms of gameplay i’m not really blown away. It dosnt look bad or anything but just nothing special.

I’m actually more interested in seeing how the game fairs in flat out PvP MP.

They only showed SP in the demo. The impression I got was that the whole thing’s really heavily class- and team-based.

I would strongly suggest fixing the heads. Just make the heads a bit bigger so they seem normal instead of shrunk.

It looks it, i just hope theres decent weapon personalisation and that weapons are balanced. I hope that having KZ’s Producer means that they’ll also use KZ2′s bullet physics and stay as far away from CoD’s as possible.

Ok got it working now.

How disappointing. It looks massively average. Hate the art style, hate the stupid cartoon characters, I was hoping for something a bit more gritty, like Bioshock. Shooting someone in the back with a shotgun from point blank range, and they don’t die? Rubbish. I expected so much more from this game.

I’m glad KZ2 had an influence on future games. This game looks fricking AWESOME!

Can’t believe that shit is running on an XBox 360. Quite freaking amazing. This game wasn’t on my radar before but it certainly is now.

To me it looks like KZ2 done with claymation. I am honestly not the impressed with how it looks. They have been saying its innovative. I am just not seeing it.

Looks alright to me. Nothing amazing tho. Just another fps, I’m getting a tad burnt out on em to be honest.

Honestly, for a game not due out until Autumn next year, this already looks completely amazing.

I love the innovative dynamic mission generation. Call me a n00b, but i can’t think of game that does that in 8 player co-op?

I like how ‘busy’ the environments are, and the engine seems fairly impressive, and choosing missions on the fly is interesting. But it just seems so… generic. Like pretty much every other squad-based military shooter except with a cartoony coating.

The innovation is in the teamplay and in the missions that you choose on the fly. It isn’t that great in single player, but the thing is that the levels and the way you play them are the same in multiplayer and co’op. That’s the innovative feature.

Anyway, it looks very good, not great (I like the lighting engine, but some of the textures don’t look THAT good), it plays well, apparently. The freedom of movement is unusual in such a game, you can lean (YEAH !) and there’s HDR sound. Plus, I like the idea of the Ark and apparently, there will be an interesting story
