PS3 firmware 3.10 to introduce Facebook functionality, other tweaks

Not to be outdone by the Xbox 360′s upcoming social media frenzy, Sony’s been doing a little super-poking around of its own. The result: PS3-powered Facebook updates.
If you so choose, the PS3 will soon be able to update your Facebook status each time you earn a Trophy or make a purchase on the PlayStation Store. It only does everything, so you don’t have to do anything. Ever.
The 3.10 update will also include a revamped XMB photo category, and an upgraded PSN friends list.
No concrete release date yet, but Sony’s saying “soon” for this one. There’s a video of the update in action after the break, courtesy of the US PlayStation Blog.

MOD-ern Warfare: Hackers bring dedicated servers back to MW2

Or at least, something that looks, smells, and tastes like dedicated servers. An intrepid group of hackers has sauntered right past Infinity Ward’s supposedly hacker-proof IWNet system and activated Modern Warfare 2′s PC dev console. The result? Take a look:
“Thanks to AgentGOD and his great work bringing the developer console back into the PC version, a whole new wave of servers are possible with vast amounts of customisation. Things such as unlimited ammo, massive experience points (10000xp for a single kill), Field of View tweaks, speed and gravity adjustments and so much more,” reads the Youtube video’s description.
“The best bit is, this is all ranked and on IWNet! I guess the game is no longer balanced to fuck the PC gamers over!”
What hast Mod wrought? Check out the full 40 ft. bunny-hopping, infinite rocket-firing video after the break.

Sony smashes God of War III co-op rumor

One Kratos already gives the gods more than they can handle, so we’re sure Greek’s most celestial bodies are thanking their lucky stars that Sony’s officially buried the God of War III co-op rumor.
“This news is false,” Sony PR guy Eric Levine told The Examiner.
Well, you heard the man. No syncronized Blades of Chaos-based ribbon dance routines for you. Er, we mean, manly blood fighting gore kill Bruce Campbell.
(Phew, close one. We are so smooth.)

Gearbox rejected chance to develop Blade Runner game
It’s probably one of the best movies of all time, so what do you think Borderlands and Brothers in Arms devs Gearbox would say to making a proper next-gen Blade Runner game? Not the answer you’d expect.
“One of my partners, Brian Martell, had Blade Runner on the list [of IPs we wanted to use],” said Gearbox bossman Randy Pitchford.
“We chased it down and we coulda had it. But that one failed on the business side, because the way we wanted to do it we wanted to spend 25 million dollars. And when you do the math on that, we weren’t going to make it back.
“You’re going to spend 25 million, there’s another 10-15 risk just in the publishing process, and then you got another 10-15 million marketing, and we didn’t think that we could make that back. So that’s too bad.”
Too bad, indeed.
Thanks, OXM.

Nelson: 360 soc media updates will “just appear” tomorrow
According to Mr Nelson, tomorrow‘s Twitter, Last.fm and Facebook 360 update won’t be an update at all: it’s all going to happen by magic.
“When we turn on the new features tomorrow they’ll just appear! No need for a system update,” said the exec.
That’s just freakin’ freaky, man. Now, if only Microsoft could master the sorcery involved in allowing people to open Twitpics and links from 360′s version of Twitter, we’d all be spellbound.
Shutup, Pat.

Miyamoto hints at Wii Music 2
Should we just run for the hills now?
Shigeru Miyamoto has hinted to ONM that Wii Music could see a sequel in the future.
“[Wii Music] was a really unique game, and even today, we are receiving several different offers from people in the field of music education… I think it still has great potential,” revealed Miyamoto.
“Unfortunately, we don’t have any news we can talk about at the moment. But like Wii Fit Plus, it’s not really a sequel to the original Wii Fit – but we have added some features to improve the overall experience. It’s a kind of an enhanced version.”

Stargate Worlds shots are proof of life
Cheyenne Mountain MMO Stargate Worlds is so not dead. New screens today – the ones at the top – are definitely of a computer game. Here’s the dream: cling onto it.
It’s all a bit odd, this. On October 18, a rep said the “company has struggled in the current economic climate to raise the funding needed to successfully develop and publish our MMORPG.
“While there continues to be a lot of desire, enthusiasm and excitement about the project from our employees, investors and fans, we will not be able to provide any updates on the development of Stargate Worlds until sufficient funding is available.”
Nice armour though, right? Thanks, Massively.

Picture proof that Splinter Cell: Conviction demo comes with ACII [Update]
Update: It seems to be for a instant download item you’d get, and not the demo. Flu: gotta love it.
Thanks, Slashgamer and DeforMAKulizer.
Original Story: GAF (via Joystiq) are showing what appears to be a voucher card for a demo of Splinter Cell: Conviction, which comes in every copy of Assassin’s Creed II.
According to folk on GAF, the code doesn’t seem to be unique, which means anyone can download the demo if they knew the code.
We just tried it there on the special website for the demo, but it doesn’t seem to be fully active until tomorrow, when the game releases in the US.

Wada: “Too much IP use is not good”
Square Enix president Yoichi Wada has admitted in a speech that over-use of an IP is “not good.”
He made his remarks during a keynote at the Montreal Games Summit.
“Too much IP use is not good,” said Wada.
“Having memorable characters and back story is crucial to having a powerful IP.”
Wada also stressed though how the Final Fantasy IP hasn’t become tired yet.
“As long as there is a world with enough content and story, players will feel comfortable being in the same world for extended periods of time.”
Find more at FF Union. Wada said in the same speech that Square Enix are working on a brand new game with their newly accquired Eidos Monreal studio.

Reggie wanted online play in New Super Mario Bros Wii
Bet you were pumped about playing four-way New Super Mario Bros Wii online, right? We were. NoA boss Reggie Fil-Aime was too. That was before “the developers” took all our dreams, hurled them against the rocks of death and turned our lives to glue by making it local-only.
“This was a decision made purely by the developers,” he told Kotaku. “They believe this experience, in the same room, to be elbowing your friends and family members as you’re playing the game [is ideal].
Hear that? It was “their decision.”
“It was really their decision.”
See?
“I personally would have loved for it to be online capable as well, but having played the game, I really can’t fault it for not being online multiplayer,” Reggie added.
The game’s out on Friday.

But what can it be? inFamous 2, of course.
See? They have already auditioned an actor to possibly take on the role of main character Cole for the sequel.
Take that as you will.

Eades: Home is “realising its potential”
Relentless boss Andy Eades has told VG that PS3′s Home is a dog that’s apparently about to have its day.
“Only now you’re starting to see that it’s realising its potential,” said the developer.
There’s still a way to go, though.
“Even now probably not quite as much as everyone would like to do,” Eades added. “But Sony has to build the tools to allow people to create content for it.
“The stuff coming through now is more compelling than when it first launched. It felt like a bit of a gap in the beginning when there wasn’t enough cool stuff happening. It always seems to be quite busy.”
More through there. Thanks, Joystiq.
