Quantic Dream: “Games can be meaningful”

heavyrain111

Speaking in an interview with Gama, Quantic Dream co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumiere has said that if done right, games could be “meaningful.”

He said: “I think that the most important goal for us is to show that video games can be more than just shooting, driving — that games can be meaningful.”

de Fondaumiere was talking in the interview of his hopes for the developer’s upcoming PS3 exclusive Heavy Rain, where he welcomed the coined term for the game “interactive movie.”

“The best short-form definition we found [for Heavy Rain] was ‘interactive movie,’ which is a double-edged sword quite simply because it reminds people of those games at the early ’90s when you were basically in a movie and you had the choice between going to the left or opening the door to the right — which of course Heavy Rain is absolutely not.”

Fucking Cage should watch a god-damn movie already. If he still thinks the voice acting and motion capture in Heavy Rain still stands up to that, he needs to quit his job.

Dude’s a moron.

I think meaning in games has taken a step back. I used to relate better to characters when they were just 2D sprites or basic 3D models spouting off lines and lines of text than I do with most of todays games.

Anyone notice it’s not David Cage this time? ;)

He’s merged into all annoying game / creative directors everywhere. Anyone who rambles on about games as movies and art with meaning will instantly fold themselves into the David Cage entity.

Though in fairness, it could just be a French thing. :D

He doesn’t “ramble on” about it. It’s an interview. He’s responding to the questions that he is being *asked*.

People act like these developers stand on a box and shout this stuff from the rooftops just for attention.

In other news, Famitsu reports that Heavy Rain hits Japan on Feb 8.

So hopefully we can expect it in Europe & the US around the same time, maybe a bit earlier?

Guillaume should really have given a date in this interview however.

he’s right though. We live in an era of meaningful button smashing (yet fun) games. It’s nice once in a while that there are games which have more depth and make your brain think besides making your finger smashing buttons
