Superannuation‘s posted a couple of videos of Sony’s E3 efforts in 2003 and 2004, and if you ever wanted to see a clear indication of just what “console war” meant at E3′s peak, look no further. Get them after the break.

For the record, 2003 was the year Sony announced PSP. The scale of what’s happening there is just insane. And shameful. And amazing. See for yourself.

The best years in gaming period. This was when the games industry was at its peak of all time greatness. No studio close downs, no big macho Activision ego’s (except E.A.). The PS2 era had it all man.

maybe they should have saved some of the cash they spunked on all that custom made stuff for a rainy day?

The PS2 single handedly introduced the industry to exactly the stuff you hate TEA.

It kinda makes you wonder how much all that cost. I mean ballpark for the materials, labour etc $100,000+ surely. Would it have been approaching $1 million for those E3s? Ya its a bit excessive, but it sold a boatload to the yanks. Everyone likes being in awe. I just wished they tore the materials down and moved them somewhere for a permanent display. I mean imagine moving the display every year to an empty mall somewhere in a major urban market, keep it going for a year with 5-8 employees. That way it doesn’t just go to waste. Use it as a marketing exercise, and feature/sponsor a gaming city of the year. Where they could then have the finals of some lame gaming event.

    What have they done wrong?

They created Alan Wake fanboys. That is the only wrong they’ve done, but it’s enoguh to hate.

@TEA PS2 made videogames big business. PS2 made casual. PS2 had less freedom for indie devs (than this geenration).

It’s not quite the same thing but at the UK Motorshow I know the big car companies usually spend about £1 million on their stands, so I could easily see Sony spending that or more for E3.
