Microsoft files patent for its own Super Guide on Xbox 360

xbox360logo

Microsoft’s filed a patent for an “Xbox 360 Super Guide” of sorts, that would allow gamers to access information on games – sort of like an FAQ.

Filed by Andre Vrignaud, director of games platform strategy at Microsoft, it would be similar to the Nintendo Super Guide, in that players could pause their game and hop online for tips and strategies submitted by users and developers.

It would also implement screenshots, video clips, audio commentary, and the possibility of allowing developers to produce official guides.

No word on when or if this is coming – or if it will be free, or for only Gold members.

We’ll ask Microsoft.

  1. If it’s anything like the Games Explorer in Windows Vista+ then it’ll be a massive fucking waste of time.

lol now they want to charge you for getting hints and tips in video games…so pathetic. They’ll try and spin this as another great exclusive feature for XBOX LIVE….AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

    Games Radar.com – FREE
    PS3 trophies.org – FREE

Accessible from my PS3 web browser which comes standard with every PS3 for…wait for it…. – FREE!

Something like this would HAVE to be free. The internetz currently holds all your videogaming questions, so why bother to be honest o_O

I don’t get why you guys get upset or even care that MS does this. You don’t like it.. you don’t purchase.. but evidently there ARE some people out there that don’t mind paying for the convenience. Not like your being forced to pay anything.

Beyond the arguing which I’m sure will come with this news post… it’s actually quite a cool idea in theory. Assuming it being available in game is actually right.

  6. theevilaires said:

Nobody is getting upset. It’s ok for you to buy gold because you save money by pirating games.

Hell, I would do the same thing too but I prefer to waste my life on PSN cause its FREE :P

It’s a cool idea in theory because the 360 doesn’t have a browser therefore you can’t just nip onto GameFAQs if you need to without firing up a computer.

However, because it’s a cool and useful thing, no doubt they’ll insist you have a Gold account in order to use it. Because they’re fuckers like that. :-D

Thing is, a browser isn’t useful in this situation because very, very few games can give you access to the browser whilst you’re playing.

That’s what I like about this. If you want to look something up, you can just do it without having to leave the game (and it should in theory be able to detect exactly where you are in the game / what you are struggling with). Better than having a laptop in front of you anyway. :)

Or at least that’s what’s indicated here: http://www.siliconera.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/image349.png

I can smell the ‘give us your money’ clause from here. :-D

It’s the bit that they’ve hidden, right there at the top. \o/

I think something like this is actually potentially useful, depending on how it’s implemented. It would be good if it interacted with your position in the game so it gives you relevant information where ever you are.
Much better than gash like facebook and twitter.

On a side note, I wish the PS3 would allow browser use in all games though so I don’t have to quit the game to look something up.

Am I the only one who reaches for their laptop while in the middle of a game if stuck.

I like the idea though, but suspect that it’ll be for Gold members.

  13. theevilaires said:

nope i do too. when i’m trophy hunting my laptop is right next to me just like now….(currently trophy hunting GOW collection)

^ Snap I just finished doing the same to get all my intel in mw2. :)

hey they wanna take away our cheat codes and code breaker so be it. Now we have you tube and websites to help us.

“lol now they want to charge you for getting hints and tips in video games…so pathetic.”

Are strategy guide writers pathetic as well for making money off their guides? o.O I think its a great idea if it can be accessed from within the game. Although I would probably still just grab my laptop for situations like intel grabbing on MW2.

As far as the ps3 with its browser, like the other person said this sounds like something you would want while in a game. Don’t you have to quit back to the navigator on ps3 to open the browser?

    @Jeremy

Plus the PS3 has no way to dump the cache from you browsing the net. I would never count the PS3 as something that you rely on to browse with. I think this is a great idea depending on how it is implemented.

I have never really been a fan of consoles with web browsers. This isnt against PS3, but the concept in general. The same things goes with my cell phone, android has a easy to use browser, but I like being able to get to what I want quicker without the conventional mouse and keyboard.

For example: I like having a “Launch facebook” button/feature than having to open a browser and go to the website. I am hoping non pc’s work more in that direction than just giving us PC features.

  19. theevilaires said:

to both of you BOTS, sony could do a simple update to allow this and optimize the browser like it was firefox. its just not top priority now. they’re working on the future. you know stuff like 3D gaming. Not little tricks like this.

Sad I have to pay M$ $50 just to send one of you noobs a game wallpaper…but on PSN I can do it for free.

    Aren’t you amazing.

  21. jeremycafe said:

I have had many people send me pictures of xbox live without having to pay for them to do it. And you can take photos off your pc to your xbox very easily. I have done it.

What does this have anything to do with bringing a guide system to 360?

  22. zoopdeloop said:

isn’t amazing how Microsoft always comes up with a plan to “steal” money from it’s users and most of these users fall in to their trap?
They remind me of Riddler(Jim Carrey)from Batman Returns where he brainwashed almost everyone in Gotham City

  23. OrbitMonkey said:

It’ll cost.. Of course it’ll cost. If you could pull it up during a game that’d be cool and usefull… So that won’t happen.
In regards to the Ps3 browser… Its fucking great imo. I don’t have a pc, so this is perfect for casal use.
