Sony wants to increase its “brand loyalty,” says Hirai
Speaking with Japan Today, Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai has said that the company wants to increase its “brand loyalty.”
It comes as last week, Hirai detailed the future of the PlayStation Network at a meeting in Tokyo, including bringing premium features for the service.
“We want to increase the value, or the brand loyalty of our Sony products. There is no question about it,” he said.
“That’s the kind of combination that I think is not seen anywhere else. That I think is where our core competence lies, and that’s a differentiator for Sony.”

ITS brand loyalty.
The VG247 curse of the errant apostrophe strikes again.

How do you increase the brand loyalty? The only thing you can do is build reliable products, or is there something else?

If they want to do that then I reckon they’ve got to do something about all the devs who see the PS3 as a secondary priority and put out inferior ports.

That’s easy.. just build better first party games.

I don’t think it’s as easy as that MushroomStamp. The quality of multi-platform games is always going to be a major tipping point.
If Multi-platform games are consistently seen as superior on the 360 then there are plenty of people who will be happy to sit back and let the price of the PS3 drop to <£200 or even <£150 before they snap one up and all its exclusives at budget price points.

Lets see…
1st: Make optional firmware for both PS3 and PSP.
2nd: Build a more better and user friendly OS for both PS3 and PSP.
3rd: Lower all PS1 classics in the PlayStation Store to $4.99 so you sell more and people can play and remember the golden days of the PlayStation Era.
4th: Bring back Ken “Father of PlayStation” Kutaragi
5th: Bring back Phil “Uncle of PlayStation” Harrison
6th: Fire yourself Kaz “Weasel” Hirai
7th: Bring back Official PlayStation Magazine with special play game DVD Demo disc.
8th: Then drop Qore on its pathetic ass.
9th: Listen to your GAP panel about what “not” to include in a firmware update so it won’t clash with western gamers style.
10th: BBC-B, Bring backwards compatibility BACK! Even if its through software. I don’t care how you do it just get it done…..
11th: ….after you finally put THE PS2 DOWN in retirement when the 10 year life cycle goal is reached.
12th: Have a free movie rental every month for everyone of your choice selection. ex: Transformers free SD rental for the month of January…February free month of Ghost Busters or something.
13th: Rewards for Platinum trophies…like earning points so you can get PSN premium content for free. Maybe like a free PS1 classic game or your choice of a premium dynamic theme.
14th: More demos for newly released or about to release games….please. (I understand why you can’t)
15th: Be more competitive with M$. Kick their ass and make them wish they had invested in making toasters instead of consoles.
16th: Oh wait the 360 is a toaster

Its cool that PS3 PSN will still be FREE TO PLAY online.. Unlike XBOX… and I will pay for ExTRA content if they really get a good content.

Build brand loyalty by doing what the territory with the largest audience, and hence the largest number of potential customers, wants. To be more specific, put out the psp2 with a 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, accelerometer, umd drive, bluetooth, and a platform wide online rewards system. Secondly, make a high def system that has a unified infrastructure with features independent of developers’ prerogatives that are system wide.

I’m as loyal as they come. Or at least I am now I used to be a fervent anti Sony head. No ps1 or 2. Nintendo till I die. Then got the wii. Got piss bored with the direction it was heading so sold it and got a ps3. Then bought a 40″ bravia. Then a Sony 5.1 surround set up. Then every ps3 extra there is. playstation eye. Used it once. Text pad thing. used it twice. Sony Bluetooth headset. Not even used it. I bleed Sony now. I’m converted. Either that or stupid. I intend to use all the add ons at some point. When I have more time. Speaking of which. A bit pissed off with Sony. Downloaded coraline in HD on Saturday afternoon to watch with my wife. But not. Psn was so slow it was still downloading the following afternoon. I ran out of time to watch it as the rental expired. Thanks Sony! Very impressive!!

I dont’ understand ANY benefit in being loyal to a brand. Every product I purchase, I evaluate & compare on the market. Loyalty breeds ignorance and arrogance. Only way to get me to keep buying the same brand, is if the brand is always top notch in that category. Why would I or Anyone, want to buy 2nd or 3rd best of something just because it has a “name” on it… just silly.

Brand loyalty is important. Get um once and you gotum good is my theory. Once you buy into something your knowledge grows. I’m loyal to apple in the same way. My knowledge and understanding of them has driven my desire to upgrade and carry on with that brand. I’m in so deep with apple now that I’ve got 3 mac pros, 2 mac books and 3 cinema displays on my desk. That’s loyalty. or stupidity again. Oh and the iPhones. Always upgraded. I guess he’s referring to the lack of people not upgrading from PS2 to PS3. If they converted all those people, and made them loyal, PS3 would be winning the race by miles now. It think I’ll be upgrading to the PS4 or whatever they come up with next. Loyalty is a good thing. No one ever put down and dog for being too loyal.

Oh I totally understand from a company point of view why you want to do this… grab the sheeple.
But as a consumer .. it makes NO SENSE to have loyalty to a name brand. Maybe you give them a first look because you have used them in the past.. but definitely does NOT mean your getting the most for your money or the best quality or anything else.
Loyalty only makes you blind to often better choices.
@Tea
Glad I could make your day.. I really was meaning this for ALL products and not just consoles.
You would be surprised at how much money I spend
I like buying stuff but only when the quality meets desire

Maybe there is the rpoblem right there? There is no brand loyalty. And if Sony thinks there should be it is no wonder they have stuggled this gen. Instead of brand Loyalty, they should see it as brand satisfaction. And in that sense they have been hit or miss. I think Tea pretty much covered it. They have the right price point now, that will be a big help right there. Just don’t kid yourself Sony, you have miles to go, in spite of the recent sales spike.

Gee Sony, it’s great that you want to foster brand loyalty. Here’s a thought: maybe you should try HAVING LOYALTY TO YOUR OWN BRAND the next time you’re deciding what backwards compatibility to support IN YOUR OWN SYSTEM.
