Modern Warfare 2 writer, Jesse Stern, has told GamePro that the airport level in the game was a “risk we had to take”.
“When we tested the level, it was interesting. Steve Mancuda, who ran a lot of the testing, said people would get angry or sad or disgusted and immediately wonder what the Hell was going on here. And then after a few moments of having that experience, they would remember that they were in a video game and they would let go.
“Every single person in testing opened fire on the crowd, which is human nature. It feels so real but at the same time it’s a video game and the response to it has been fascinating. I never really knew you could elicit such a deep feeling from a video game, but it has.
“I hope that people don’t just look at it as being this simplistic and brutal sequence. We’ve done our best to treat it with care and not to make it gratuitous. The effect of it is you absolutely hate this guy, and the war that takes place in the game is set in motion.
“I hope that game developers take the lesson that you’ve got to try things. You’ve got to go out on a limb sometimes. This is a triple-A game and the top grosser of all time with this huge budget behind it, yet we’re still taking major chances wherever we can and the airport level was a risk we had to take.
“Sometimes you take huge risks and it really works. Sometimes it doesn’t work at all. But if you don’t take the chance, you’re not going to make something new.”

it did genuinely catch me off guard for a moment. When the elevator doors open and this hail of bullets rings out. i nearly wet myself in disbelief. then promptly shot everyone.

The story does make sense its the little bits like what happened with soap and price that needed work.

The guy looks like a duche bag.. no wonder he made this level..

What a load of rubbish. For one the writing in the game pretty much sucks, the story makes roughly zero sense and the level simply isn’t some huge risk.
Besides, people genuinely feeling they had to ‘take the risk’ normally don’t provide a ‘don’t take the risk’ option to skip the aforementioned risk.

I hated the scene because it was so badly done. WIth the Favela-level the worst level in the game, bar none.

People harbour a lot of hate for this game on this site. Surprising O_o

The option to skip the level was Infinity Wards get out of jail card if they got too much flak. I think they got it pretty much spot on. Unlike GTA which DOES make the senseless slaughter of civilians fun and rewarding.
The whole bit about it being human nature to join in on the massacre is bollocks though. I never pulled the trigger till the police turned up and only shot about 4 of them.

I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
(The level before the bit at the very end was also shit)

Human nature to open fire on people – really? Human nature of americans? Perhaps

You know I am getting sick of the generalization of Americans. I am not sure what is on your TVs but it must be all about Americans killing eachother.
How about I make a stab at people over in Europe don’t know anything about taking care of their teeth. That is true right?

I am going to side with Phoenix, it gets old fast. On one hand you tell us we are too violent because, what we have violent video games, and yet you fuel the market when you buy them. Our movies are too violent, yet you watch them too. I think the WORLD is too violent. Terreorist, pirates, lack of human rights in China, tribal clashes in africa, oppresion in thrid world nations around the world, the beating/abusing/scaring of women in middle eastern nations. Wanna know what else is brutal? With holding life saving medicine because someone can not afford to pay for it. Out sourcing someones job to third world slave labour. School shootings(remember that video of the kid flipping out over MW2?) Racism, bigitery, homophobia, ignorance, and more.
Yes I think the world is a very ugly place. But you can stop painting Americans as the root cause and sole particapents. In my mind there is no other nation on this planet that has your back like we do. Both as a nation and as a people.
/Rant off.

Generally… yeah. Or at least we don’t have access to cheap cosmetic dentistry.
As for what’s on our TVs, yeah, gun violence in America does get a lot of coverage.

Only the British.

It does here too – a guy gets murdered in North Dakota and it makes headlines FFS. Our news caters to gossip and fear mongering at the best of times.
The only thing I can say about guns is that if we are ever invaded, since 1 in 4 Americans own a gun of some sort (I pulled that number out of my ass because I honestly don’t know or care), we have loads of crazy, armed southerners, gangbangers, and the NRA ready to pull their 357’s out of the cupboard to defend us since the military is so spread out – then they will more than likely sack every store in every town across the nation afterward.
Phoenixblight said:
Our Forefathers gave us that right not only to defend ourselves but also from the government if need be. I personally don’t own a gun, have no need to. Plus I prefer to bludgeon, hurts more and especially handy in case of zombie apocalypse

You should always be prepared for the Zombie Apocalypse. I predict it will happen in 2012

I don’t think many if any Europeans (ok, maybe the Germans) blame any sort of entertainment media, games, movies or otherwise, for the perceived violent nature of Americans, so I think it’s unfair to say we’re fueling anything. Rather it’s your own conservative right-wing that pushes that envelope, not Europe.
As for armed hicks Vs tanks. Them gonna be some well greased tank treads.

Not all of us are extreme right or extreme left wing nut jobs, freedoms. I promise.
Voting does not help us cull them out either, since each President has been predetermined by a secret society that has been calling the shots since the country was founded. This group of clandestine string pullers have also been in cahoots with the aliens since Roswell.

I don’t get the popularity of MW series, it’s the game where people are killing people nowadays. Why would you want to kill someone of your kind, even if it’s just a game. You have such brilliant games as Halo or Gears of War where people are fighting completely different species. And in multiplayer when you are either of the species it’s ok to kill your enemies cause they’re not of your kind. In MW one group of people are presented as superior to another group of people, which is wrong. The other group can be brainwashed or forced into percieving the world as they do.
Simply don’t get it.
