Left 4 Dead 2′s “realism” earned it an Oz ban
The OFLC turned down Left 4 Dead 2′s appeal for release in Australia because of its “realism,” according to documents obtained by Gamespot.
Apparently there was “insufficient delineation between the depiction of the general zombie figures and the human figures as opposed to the clearly fictional ‘infected’ characters,” and “whether the objects of the violence were fictional or real, and whether a 15 year old could discern the difference, is largely irrelevant where the game displays the level of realism this one does”.
Yeah. That’s stupid. More through there. Thanks, EG.

Realism? They’re polygons… With, you know, texture maps, and stuff, what do I know…
These people need their heads checked, they’re obviously delusional…

I think they should send the entire board of classification to Specsavers then have them reclassify the game.

And yet the first game passed despite also having :
“insufficient delineation between the depiction of the general zombie figures and the human figures as opposed to the clearly fictional ‘infected’ characters,”?
I mean its not like any of that stuff wasnt in the first game.
Sense this makes none.

It might have something to do with the daylight, but looking at screens and videos the infected are clearly grey skinned with blank white eyes and a ghoulish appearance, inhuman contortions of the features etc.
Basically they’re clearly zombies to anyone who cares to look.

It’s 18 rated in England.
Don’t they have an over 15 rating in Oz?
Maybe they might want to make one.

Well that’s the crux, 15 is the max rating.

We don’t have an R18+ rating for games down here.
“…extending the R18+ rating to video games requires agreement by all Australian state Attorneys General. However, South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson (the oldest of the 6) has opposed such a move, stating that the while the lack of a R18+ rating restricts choice, “that is the price of keeping this material from children and vulnerable adults…”
