Russia recalls Modern Warfare 2 from shelves

Uh-oh.

Russia has recalled all copies of Modern Warfare 2, thanks to the inclusion of the airport level in the game.

Infinity Ward has patched the PC version in the country to get rid of the level completely, with an edited retail version due for release in stores shortly.

Thats not all though, nuh-uh. Russian gamers aren’t pleased that the game’s centric plot revolves around a US/Russian war.

Amazing stuff, innit.

Russians have been well used to being painted ‘the bad guy’ in American produced media for a long while now…

That’s because they are the bad guy.

Nonsense, everyone knows that slightly posh Brits make the best bad guys.

Ah but in MW2 the British are the real heroes. Hurrah.

A good russian or a bad russian captain gig?

A good one who saves the day at the very end of the game.

We are left with an Englishman, a Scot and a Russian.

Which I found to be a strange, but refreshing choice by IW.

It’s very easy for you to sit here and make fun isnt it ?

I am not russian but the truth is, I can understand where they are coming from. Sure, it’s just game yeah, we all love that argument dont we ? But you HAVE to admit that this is what creates stereotypes which ends up influencing public opinion.

You can disagree with me all you want.

What exactly is creating a stereotype here?

Whilst this type of nationalistic stereotyping may already be common, the differentiating factor here is the incredibly high profile of MW2. Such mainstream titles do set a precedent. That’s what makes the difference here.

well without ruining anything, MW2 shows that the american’s arn’t always the good guys. I’d hardly say this game is stereotypical. especially when the russians are not even acting as they normally would.

    Exactly.

In fact, the game goes a long way to turn the traditional ‘good West vs bad East’ on its head.

The US vs Russia war in the game is not as straightforward as it may sound.

I don’t see what they’re moaning about, they’re clearly winning in the game.

Is this a new take on the old joke?

my words are solid&lt this is just the begining. Like said after the hype.

I would like to say their tension between nwo and russia not tooo long ago.

    It was over oil too.

It gets really boring after a while.

The game IS stereotypical, and the Russians ARE portrayed as morons. One look at Zakhaev’s monument is enough to realise that.

russia is badass, thats why they made em the bad guy. We all know that russians are big old teddy bears at heart. I dont think rocky would be so cool if he didn’t have a 15 foot russian smashin his face in.

Its a computer game! The Airport level is amamazingly cool! Who cares what the dafty Russian political machine thinks. Just coz wee shoot some peeps in a game dont mean were up for it in reality!!! I stay in Glasgow where wee are very well versed in botched Airport attacks by daft brown doctors and wee all think this games a scream!

The real problem is that there aren’t enough high profile russian games. There are excellent Ukranian and Swedish games, but apparently, nobody in russia managed to build a studio making something else than shitty FPS.

I hope Modern Warfare 2 is going to show the russian government that games are good instruments of propaganda.

After all, some of the old communists propaganda films from the early XXth century are excellent, that could lead to good games as well.

    Yeah, that’d be interesting.

It’d raise a whole new era of fanboy warfare.

You’d have the Japanese (Sony + Nintendo) vs the Americans (MS) vs the Russians (??).

    Nice!

Isn’t this like any other country getting upset if they’re the “enemies” in a fictional movie? You don’t hear about that too often now do ya…
