Speaking in an interview with TGS, the voiceover for Mario, Charles Martinet, has said he wanted to voice Link in a Legend of Zelda game, but was refused by Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

“I spoke to Mr. Miyamoto and said: “I wanna be Link, I wanna be Link”, and Miyamoto told me that Link isn’t going to have a voice; he is going to stay the way he is,” said Martinet.

“Of course Mr. Miyamoto is always right! The way it works right now is the way it is supposed to be. It’s the genius of Miyamoto and he knows just the right formula for making his games more fun and more exciting. For example in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, If things slowed down for Mario to express his inner feelings it just wouldn’t work and this way it keeps our hearts pounding with enthusiasm.”

There you have it. Stick at Mario. Find the full interview through the link.

Remember what happened the last time someone thought it’d be a good idea to have Link speak? That abominable animated series where they gave him the voice and personality of some bratty sex starved American teenager.

    It must never happen again!

That was because they did a sloppy job in dialogues and had a crappy voice .

I dont mind link not having a voice , but it’s hardly the genius idea they try to make it … more like everyone cutting the franchise slacks as usual , in area most other would get ripped apart for the same flaws ….

Remember when everyone would start cursing at mute jrpg heros ? Well i still do , and Link is hardly more compelling and charismatic in their plots .

I agree with neolucifer. The last time he was voiced it was a disaster because those making it were awful people. Zelda is generally given far too much leeway in its use of archaic design ideas which is the reason I got about half way through twilight princess before dumping it because of it’s frankly lazy approach to story and characters.

“Oh, hey, look, thanks for saving me, also, you need to go here, here and here and collect 3 things then we’ll talk”
