Call of Duty to get “additional online monetization models”
Bet you never saw this coming. ActiBlizz CFO Tom Tippl’s told this week’s BMO Capital Markets Conference that Call of Duty, as well as more of the firm’s “biggest franchises,” are to benefit from Blizzard’s World of Warcraft online money-making skills.
“It’s definitely an aspiration that we see potential in, particularly as we look at different business models to monetize the online gameplay,” said Tippl. “There’s good knowledge exchange happening between the Blizzard folks and our online guys.
“We have great experience also on Call of Duty with the success we had on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. A lot of that knowledge is getting actually built into the Battle.Net platform and the design of that,” he added. “I think it’s been mutually beneficial, and you should expect us to test and ultimately launch additional online monetization models of some of some of our biggest franchises like Call of Duty.”
Call of Warcraft 3. We kill ourselves. More on IGN.

It’ll be like paintball, you get your first 6 cannisters of ammo free, then you’re Koticks bitch.

When I was a teenager, playing my SNES, I always dreamed that one day there would be online monetization models. And now those prayers have been answered. *gunshot*

I hope people start to complain about this. I could do with a giggle.

It’s things like this that made me decide to never buy a brand new copy of an Activision game ever again. I’m not saying a company shouldn’t be able to make profits: of course not, that’s what they’re in the business to do. But Activision are profiteerers, not profit-makers.

The most beautiful term this industry has ever known: ‘monetization model’.

This could be the new DLC. As long as you pay, new content will be added periodicly. Probably premature. This is kind of how a I see cloud based services going. Think one part Gametap, one part xbLIVE, all subscription fees. Except the games, you will mostly likly still need to buy those at full price.

I don’t mind paying for DLC if I think it’s worthwhile but I’m certainly not paying a monthly fee.
I haven’t played an MMO since the original UO for that very reason.
The day monthly fees become the norm is the day I give up on modern gaming and stick with retro titles.
And I’m certainly not paying money for a shinier (or more likely, a better gun.) Maps and modes added at a later date I can get my head around. Horse armour I cannot.
