PC version of Modern Warfare 2 unplayable until Tuesday

That’s a nice copy of Modern Warfare 2 for the PC you’ve got there. Bet you thought you were dreaming when you saw it perched on some clueless retailer’s shelf. Now, though, it’s time for a particularly rude wakeup call. See, the game won’t work until Tuesday.
“If you bought a retail copy on PC, you can play it on 11.10.09,” Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling tweeted.
Since the game uses Steamworks, it’ll stay locked-up tight on Steam until Tuesday.
And you thought the wait was bad before. Now you can touch the game, peruse its manual, or even use its disc as a really snazzy looking frisbee. But you can’t play it. Bummer.
Thanks, Big Download.

This has seriously got to set a new record for the amount of things done wrong in a single PC game.

To be fair, this has been before and is done to prevent piracy.
The crackers have been stonewalled, something that usually doesn’t happen with standard releases.

Shame I already cancelled my pre-order when I heard how bad they’ve made the PC version.

Yep, alot of people seem to be recieving there copies early in the UK, due to the postal strike being cancelled.

Oh yeah, sooo unfair they have to wait for the ACTUAL release day – Oh please. I think it’s bloody awesome they are able to do this!

The worst thing about this, is that it won’t even allow to install it before the release date.

I remember getting FEAR 2 early and not being able to play it because of this bullshit time activation stuff. I’ve stopped buying PC games because of the DRM now, it’s not worth paying for a game that won’t work when the activation servers die.

endgame: Actually, no they cant.
You know why?
Because the exe just isn’t there.
That’s the thing about steam activation, until the point where players can play it, the exe just isn’t there.
Now there might be a difference with the disc version, but I doubt they have the exe on the disc either.

I think this concept of waiting for a release date is outdated.
When the game is ready, let us have it, maybe you want to wait on the consoles so you can boast how many sales you made in the 1st week, or wait so you can avoid another big title impacting your sales, but I reckon that’s a wasted effort on the PC audience.
Furthermore with digital distribution the PC is the prime platform for releasing games as soon as they’re in a release state.
Fuck release dates. The game is finished, lets play.

I agree with holding onto finished games on consoles. That makes sense because the perception of strong sales is so important. Therefore having the bulk of your numbers grouped up to show a strong opeing launch is key. But on a PC that concept doesn’t apply.
