First review for Modern Warfare 2 goes live [Update]
Update: The Telegraph has gone live with its review, giving it 10/10.
“All told, Modern Warfare 2 crosses into the must-have category of video games effortlessly. It offers an unmatched shooter experience, a compelling story mode, a slick package of mini missions and a multiplayer which is pretty much unparalleled in depth. It’s sure to satisfy the demands of its fan base, and anyone who considers themselves a fan of shooters in general should definitely pick up a copy. It may be debatable as to whether Modern Warfare 2 is objectively the best release of this year, but it’s certainly the finest game in its genre, as well one of the truly great games of this or indeed any year.”
And the floodgates open…
Thanks, Mafro.
Original Story: The Guardian’s gone live with what appears to be the first review of Modern Warfare 2, giving it a 5/5.
Here’s a snip:
“All in all, MW2 is exactly what fans were expecting. Yes, it carries a hefty price-tag, a shortish single player campaign and only adds a handful of genuinely new elements to the prequel, but you won’t find a more polished, intelligent FPS this year. For non-stop action, superior AI and perfectly balanced weapons, it’s a worthy chart-topper that hammers a nail into any hope of the COD franchise returning to its WW2 roots anytime short of the next round of console upgrades. And, on this evidence, you won’t find too many complaints about that.”
Well kids, you know what to do. Go nuts. Get money. And line up tonight for the midnight launches.

how can you say ” Yes, it carries a hefty price-tag, a shortish single player campaign and only adds a handful of genuinely new elements to the prequel”, then give it a perfect score?
Ive no doubt this is gonna be one of the best games around, but from the quote above you can see it does have it’s flaws.

Because its a tad over rated and much over hyped. Perhaps a 4/5 would have been a better score?

“a perfect score”
oh shut up with that shit.
“Ive no doubt this is gonna be one of the best games around”
so a 5/5 is correct then.

It’s bad enough when people claim 10/10 is meant to be a “perfect” score, but saying 5/5 is meant to be perfect is just silly.

oh I will or I just won’t touch the SP in MW2 until I do. Trophies or not the story element of the game is very important to me.

What are you talking about? If a site reviews a game out of Five and gives it a Five is that not a perfect score?
Translated that is still 100% which is perfect is it not?

Yes it is.
It’s also a 10 on Metacritic.

And the most overhyped game of the year goes too…
No not Halo for a change.

The only argument I have with scoring is that in my opinion VERY few games are truely perfect. I can think of tons that I played to death, but even they weren’t perfect. I see it as a far bet that MW2 isn’t perfect either. But I really doubt anyone will have the guts to point it out. No doubt this game is going to sell millions, and for fear of gamer backlash, most sites will run it through the perfect score/review machine.

People really need to come to terms with the fact that, objectively speaking, this game is as close to perfect as a shooter has ever come.

@Joe Anderson
No – 5 is simply the top score they are able to give – it doesn’t imply the game is perfect. It just means it’s in the top twenty percent of the scoring scale. (Or 17% if they can give 0 stars).
Think of it this way – no game is ever perfect – so no game would ever get the score if it meant perfection – so it would be a pointless score if it never got used.
If they marked games out of 100 and wanted to score it 95% for example – you think that should translate to 4/5 on a 5 star scale? How does that distinguish it from the myriad of titles which would only score 70-85% for example?

@drdamn
All im trying to say is that journos are too afraid to mark games like this down because they are not original enough. The hype for this game has already gave it perfect marks before the reviews even come in.

This game is far from being perfect. If its has more than 5 flaws then it is not perfect. It would blow me away when CoD buildings can be fully destroyed & the environment around.

Oh yeah I agree – the hype train can really affect review scores. Just don’t think about top marks from scales of 0-10 and 0-5 as being perfect. They were never meant to imply that – they just mean very, very good. Which this could well be.

Can we please also consider the amount of advertisment cash flow that Acti has paid a few of these reviewers websites? Yes the samething happens to alot of big name games, but I think it merrits mentioning.

So I guess the kind of up-market journalism school you need to attend to write for the Telegraph or Grauniad aren’t above teaching the virtues of using a completely banal stock phrase to totally neatly segue into your closing arguments.
