John Carmack: RAGE probably won’t have dedicated servers

rage22

Hey there, PC gamers. How are you feeling? Is this a good temperature? Should we fluff your chair cushions a little more? Good, good. Alright, now take a seat. Again, you’re feeling nice and calm, right? And you’ll note that we’ve moved all throwable objects just outside your reach. Ok, here we go:

“It’s not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don’t think we will have dedicated servers,” id Software’s John Carmack told Variety concerning his next big-ticket title, RAGE.

“The great thing is we won’t have to be a pioneer on that,” he added. “We’ll see how it works out for everyone else.”

Have you been working out, PC gamers? You suddenly look abnormally muscular. And green. NO NOT THE FAC–

I always thought that journalism, whilst it can have some humour, is meant to be neutral and non-antagonistic. I feel that this piece of ‘news’ is neither and fully aimed at BDH.

And, as Ashelia said above, I’m seeing more and more bashing of the PC as a platform and PC gamers on this site, more than any other news sites. Maybe Pat should rein in his staff a bit, because even I am starting to become jaded with this site, and that takes a lot for me.

O’Connor didnt say that, i dont think he even meant that.

It a perfectly humourous pointer at PC gamers recent reaction to MW2 not having dedicated servers and how RAGE not having them will probably cause… RAAAGGGGEEE!!!!

Its not like he said “In your Face PC ghey’mers!” now is it.

Odd, I always thought of as Rage a single player game. Open world sort of thing.

All those years of rampant piracy has finally caught up with the PC gaming community and now they pay the price. Understandable dev’s are trying their hardest to protect their work, and indeed keep the PC gaming industry alive…. what’s left of it.

You hear that BDH?

oh yeah, it’s good that u won’t have to be pioneers on that. ’cause mw2 will be a test, and if it will fail, and u (id) still won’t add dedicated servers to your game, WE WILL pirate the game to hell and back, wether it’s on xbox 360 or pc. cheers!

Plus they’re not really having a bash at PC gamers, they’re just finding the funny side in the constant bullshit we have to put up with.

I can honestly say I had no idea RAGE was going to have multiplayer. That said, if this “No Dedicated Servers” thing turns into a trend it’s going to be a real step backwards in my opinion.

I dunno…

If it combats piracy well enough, it might mean devs putting a lot more focus on the quality PC versions/games, because they will be looking forward to increased profits.

u guys really don’t understand that THIS WILL NOT stop piracy don’t u? eeeh, just give me a week or two after they release mw2 and i’ll find some pirated servers for u just so u see how easy it can be done.

#15

G1GAHURTZ
06/11/09, 11:22 am

If it’s so easy, then why are so many people so upset?

Because something that a random hacking group has forced into the program is never really likely to work as well, or be as well supported as something that was built into the game from day one.

Not to mention the fact that most people playing probably wont hack their client, but they would use the functionality if it was in the game. That just leads to a fractured userbase.

#17

G1GAHURTZ
06/11/09, 11:28 am

So it will have an effect on piracy then?

#18

Psychotext
06/11/09, 11:35 am

Yeah, likely cause it as people skip the retail version and download a hacked version later which has the functionality they want.

wolfenstin is an epic flop of game. Id software was on decline on the pc market any way.

they start out on console any way and guess what their wolfenstin is an epic flop.

yea that is right what does ut3,fear2 and wolfenstin all have in common.

they are an epic flop

@Redh3lix

pc gamers can play any game they want. they can play from any console they want. we can build emulators and other programs to console games. in fact we don’t need consoles.

we can play the game with game devs or with out them.

by the way big companies have been fighting pirates for years now. what makes you think these big comapnies can beat them. hackers hack everything, it like candy to them.

even if they killed pc gaming, consoles will get pirrated to hell and bank any way. pc gaming does not have a black market like console gaming does.

yes it is easyer to pirrate pc games and because of that there is no black market for pc games.

but as for a pc gamer why would i want a garbage game. Console games are garbage compared to pc gaming. I wouldn’t want to waste my time with them.

lets take the new wolfenstin for exmaple, do you know why it floped it is because it’s a console garbage.

all the game devs are doing is piss off pc gamers. maybe also pissing off a hacker.

if them hackers and pirate declair war on them consoles.

more money is going to go down the drain for them publishers hardware companies.

the best way for publishers to beat pirates is to close down their markets around the world.

I also recomed that they move online. which is why support blizzard in a way with battle net.

@ blackdreamhunk: Although I appreciate I can ignore your comments the sheer regularity of them makes it difficult. You rarely make a coherent argument I genuinely struggle to believe you are a real person…surely this is a drawn out charicature of a PC gamer?

Please, please implement some kind of grammar check. It would also be excellent if you used punctuation and thought through what you are going to say before you type it.

How come you turn everything into an anti-console rant? I’ve not known many people with a greater fear of inanimate objects. Pcs and consoles have lived side by side for decades and will continue to do so.

@ BDH

Having played RTCW and Wolfesntein: Enemy Territory and the more recent Enemy Territory: Quake Wars back in the day, I followed the development of Wolf 2 quite closely. It’s failure was nothing to do with consoles at all.

ET:QW was a success on both PC and console btw.

Wolfenstein was just an average game.

That’s why people don’t buy it.

The mp wasn’t even as good as it’s prequel for a start…

Why would people buy a game that was was than the version before it!?

Quake Wars was a success on the consoles? Where was this? Insanity land? They were terrible ports and no one was playing it online past the first month on the consoles.

This is a conspiracy to end PC gaming by game developers.

#38

Gekidami

Not really. Just a massive loss of interest from devs. They’re pretty much fed up of having their stuff hacked and stolen whilst the legit copies sell poorly.

Based off the recently released financial reports it looks like theres no benefit what so ever to release a game exclusively on PC unless its an MMO at which point you can pretty much get into your customers bank accounts and take your dues every month for a single product (aka milk em).
