Infinity Ward: MW2 dedicated server petition suspect, server capped at 9v9

Wednesday, 4th November 2009 17:24 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Infinity Ward’s Mackey McCandlish and Ryan Lastimosa had an online chat with the Best Buy community, and in it, the developers discussed the petition for dedicated servers in Modern Warfare 2 and also let slip that servers across all platforms will max out at eighteen players.

Here’s some highlights from the chat, just the bits about the server issues, courtesy of Brave New Gamer.

When asked if there will be dedicated servers added later:

“We feel the PC game is great in it’s current form. We put a lot of work into IWnet in an effort to make the PC experience better for our users. We believe MW2 is better than CoD4:MW.  The reason exists is to improve the gameplay for our users. If there is a need for something more in the future we will address as needed. Our goal is to provide the best experience for our users, so nothing is ever “off the table”. We are always evaluating our options.”

When asked about the petition for dedicated servers:

“All I can say is that we changed it to make it a better and easier experience. Also, not all of the [178,000] names on that list are legit. 402 signed it 4 times I heard.”

On the PC version. Are all games hosted by players, and is there a 5 second delay when host migration is in effect?

“Games cap out at 9v9. The software has great latency tolerance.”

On LAN Parties:

“We can play at work on our lan by doing private match and there is no lag.”

All that was categorized a bit for you. The full chat is through the link there.

How about you discuss eating a bag of dicks IW :)
Then maybe you will think to have dedicated servers for pc

That was obvious, they wanted standardised settings like the console version and that includes everything!

If I could cancel my pre-order more than I already have done I would.

    What are they thinking?!

Talk about destroying the reputation of a great franchise.

Could you all give this a read?

Best video games journalism I have seen in a LONG TIME.

@ Stephany could you give it a read to I think there is very interesting stuff in here :)

Haha. They try and justify how good IW net is, by telling us that they’ve capped the number of players in multiplayer so there’s less latency.

I dont’ like games with more than 18 people anyway.. Then it becomes Battlefield and not fun.. I like the smaller teams. to me perfect size teams are 6v6.

@slayer : I started to read that article till I finished the 2nd paragraph and found it to be COMPLETELY false. The viewpoints for online console community were just spiteful words that were not true in any fashion. I found it judgmental completely without merit or facts. So I stopped reading the article. No point in continuing when the baseline was askew.

“Also, not all of the [178,000] names on that list are legit. 402 signed it 4 times I heard.””

1600 people out of 180000. Awesome that amounts to less than one percent. Great point. :D

This all reminds me of food products re-released with “NEW AND IMPROVED FLAVOUR”, which in fact means they’ve taken out/reduced a certain ingrediant to save costs, thus altering the flavour.

It’s EXACTLY the same with Infinity Ward stating “We put a lot of work into IWnet in an effort to make the PC experience better for our users.” ….. WHAT THE FUCK can you do to improve the online gaming experience other than dedicated servers ?!??!?!

I wish people would stop focusing on the fucking playercount.

6v6 (it’s only 9v9 in Groundwar, which is only one playlist) is fine, because the game is balanced for 6v6. Same thing with CoD4; 50-man FFA Shipment servers were shit. If you want games that don’t suck when you have huge playercounts, play ArmA or Battlefield – not CoD.

Not only is 6v6 fine when the game is balanced around it, but there are FAR more worrying things that came out of that Q&A session – like the fact that there’s no in-game console, the FOV is locked to one appropriate for someone sitting ten feet away from a 32″ TV and not one foot away from a 21″ monitor, etc. Hell, people seem to have forgotten that IW has complete control over which map and which gametype you play thanks to their playlist system.

haha hahaha ha Holy shit that community chat is awesome :

    On realism:
    >We get most of our ideas from real weapons being fielded right now from multiple military and other operating sources. We strive to make each weapon look and feel as they would in real life.

    On dual wielding:
    >[You can dual wield] shottys if I’m not mistaken.

    On leaning:
    >The game is not balanced for lean.

On in-game customization (FOV, weapon tweaking, etc):
    >We would like you to play the game the way we designed and balanced it.

    On clan play:
    >You can use friendslists in steam to play together.

Its like IW are the worst trolls in the World and are just waiting to see when everyone cracks before pissing themselves and jumping into a pile of money.

“On LAN Parties:“We can play at work on our lan by doing private match and there is no lag.”

Wonder how many gamers have enough internet access points in their basement for all players. :)

Really? You can do it at the office? Wonderfull, develope a game feature not thinnking about avarage consumer net acces. That’s really smart, good move!

Cod4 was one of the big games at our LAN parties, I geuse MW2 isn’t gonna replace it any time soon.

Holy crap. Any other current gen game would be absolutely slaughtered and dragged repeatedly over the hot coals, made LOLCATS images of, have 4-Chan create half a dozen insult-memes that lasted a year or three and get endlessly bashed by all the ‘hipper than thou’ gaming blogs that sheepishly follow whatever the internet trend of the moment is.

As it’s MW2, they’ll get away with it. This sort of shit would kill any other game dead in its tracks.

Whats going to happen with something like Pro Gaming events, do all the PCs have to be signed into Steam or compete as a Clan? The entire Clan has to be on one anothers Steam Friends lists?

Oh wait thats a small population of players and as such is perfectly allowed to be completely ignored.

“Erode the ethical foundation the industry was built on” What’s this soap boxer from slayer’s article going on about?! The industry was founded on the principal that if as many people own a TV set, and then that TV only shows several channels, often not showing items of preference, well, perhaps they could give viewers something else to do than going to the hassle of setting out the Monopoly board again… :D

The part he misses is that if Sk-IWnet does turn sentient, and attempts to massacre the hopes and dreams of its PC userbase… Well, couldn’t said userbase simply walk away, and abandon the game? They’ve done it before, judging by the reported lukewarm pro response to CoDs 3/5. For a PC game to survive, it needs support and credibility within its community – isn’t that the fail safe, that would stop Acti doing something stupid? If as the article asserts, the PC guys really are such of a minority, they still do retain that power.

They could but then they’d just get called pirates that never bought the game in the first place and nothing would change.

Whats that? You don’t like this? Stop being so fucking whiney you fucking whiney whine-bag. I bet you pirate games aswell. Pirate. Whiney pirate.

I don’t know. It seems to me that PC players are concerned about any mainstream influx. They like PC being more of a restricted platform. MW2 attracts those mainstreamers, they like to shoot the guns. But, they bring cash. It’s not a stretch to think that those who did find their way to MW2, would go on to play other things (perhaps they’ll start selling computers with “compatible with Modern Warfare 2″ on the advertising!) so, there’d be a larger audience. This could have some impact on the view that PC gaming is in a slump, and being prioritised less? So, if things were to improve in that regard, wouldn’t the protesters against increased accessibility have shot themselves in the foot?

I think Modern Warfare 2 has that sort of reach, and appeal. But the detractors I agree with only, as far as things may well be approaching a crossroads.

wow goes to show how dumb some people are. If pc gamers really wanted to play this game we will hack the game or mod.

there is nothing pc gamers can’t do. As game devs pissing pc gamers off, keep doing it. it’s only looking bad for cooperate companies. It only looking bad for the game devs them self.

I wouldn’t be supised if alot of console get hacked so bad from now on in.

If pc gamers really want to play any console game they could create emulators and play any game we want.

If fact we mod any console game and make so it runs on the pc.

AS for Infinty ward they are done as company. There is alot more pc gamers then them out there.

I am glade this happened it shows the world how ugly some game devs are and they desrve to have their games pirated.
