360 party chat blocked in Modern Warfare 2

modernwarfare28

Oh, hello? Whats this? Oh look, party chat for the 360 is blocked while playing Modern Warfare 2.

According to TSA (via GAF), the feature can not be used while playing the multiplayer for the game.

It is down to avoiding cheating in the game, which means that if you want to speak with your friends in the game, it has to be done in the channel in-game.

Find more through the links. The game is out next Tuesday.

Thanks, Gekidami.

That’s got to be horseshit, the English in that screen cap is woeful for a start!

Makes a lot of sense… don’t know if it’s accurate or not though.

As long as spectators aren’t allowed during matches (clan matches), I see no point in blocking party chat.

Nah, tbh, me and the guys that I play with usually stay on in-game chat for the banter, but somtimes we stay on party chat if we can’t be bothered to switch over.

Obviously, this gives an unfair advantage for S+D in particular, so it makes sense to take it out.

I don’t care if it stops cheating or not. I pay £40 a year to have those features and I’m not going to pay it if devlopers think they can just block them off from me.

I really hope this isn’t true and if so, i’m shocked Microsoft would allow this as they are usually kinda strict on this sort of thing.

@ 6:

So what do you think that you’re going to be missing out on here?

@G1GA
I’ve frequently had to resort to private or party chat in games – including CoD4 – where in game chat has failed. I can see that it does allow cheating in S+D – so why not just disable it in there?

Oh and if people want to cheat they will find a way – this is just making it a bit more inconvenient for them. They can always use a telephone, PC or other console to work around this.

In-game chat has failed???

What do you mean? I’ve never known that to happen before…

They can always use a telephone, PC or other console to work around this.

Of course they can.

They can also flash their 360′s and DL illegal software, but that doesn’t mean that you should make it any easier for them to do it.

Essentially when the servers get overloaded they seem to cut in-game chat. Either that or it fails to get set-up correctly. E.g. Only certain people can be heard by others etc. Switching to private / party chat has resolved it. It’s also a lot more convenient to have party chat than mess about with turning on friends chat only just for this game.

Party chat has other advantages too. A friend can join a party whilst you are playing a game and chat about joining the group.

S&D party chat had to be fixed.

As far as chat failing in xbox live, that is a host issue, not “server overloading”. I have a local friend that I can never talk to in game if he is the host of the lobby, but if someone else hosts its fine. I would think that is more of a game bug than xbox live not letting you talk. Sure party chat fixes that, but that doesnt fix the issue. When this happens, the host will say find game and you wont get put in the same match.

oh well its still better than using skype for cross game chatting with PS3 games :P

speaking of cross game chat stuff, hey Garratt what happened to your secret mole in Sony with the cross game chat for PS3?

Im not gonna lie, I was never going to buy Modern Warfare 2 because I was only mildly impressed with the first game. However, how come there are so many articles recently about IW’s controversial/dick moves. This being one, dedicated servers being the second and the interactive experience where you kill innocents being the third. Correct me if I’m wrong about these, I don’t follow COD much. Party chat is great, I enjoy in game chat too but about 80% of the time I am in party chat it involves talking to friends who are in different games.

@jeremycafe
I was talking about other games too – where there is a client-server set-up.

What is wrong with leaving party chat in but for S&D when you die you can only see what a remaining players on your team can see. I.e no camera control. That way you are not pissing off the people using dashboard features they have paid for with valid reasons for their use. That would actually stop them using other means of communication too and be a better solution no?

“I pay £40 a year…”

Well there’s your first problem. :P

@ Eon: If you’re not going to buy the game, why does it bother you?

@ DD: You can also tell people on your team where you got killed and where other players are, even if you can’t see what’s going on, so they would need to turn chat off completely for S+D when you die rather than just limiting the cameras.

That’s not exactly a huge amount of info a decent team wouldn’t get the gist of anyway. They could help mitigate that by turning off the killcam too.

The focus should be on stopping the cheaters not on removing features for the genuine players.

Bottom line. Private chat and party chat are great features which a useful to many. IW are taking them out for the *whole* game for all players a minority of cheaters in one specific mode when there are other more valid options. That is why people are pissed off with this.

Yeah, I can understand that of course. Actually, it’s not only that. Some people just don’t like talking to gamers that they don’t know in general (a lot of girls, for obvious reasons), so they’d have to lose out on the benefits of party chat whilst playing the game too.

However, I play a lot of S+D, and usually all we ever need is the general location of the other team or players on the other team and we have the advantage. So even if it’s just a 2 destroyers vs 1 camped defender, and one destroyer sees where he is before dying, it’s still an unfair advantage if he can then tell the remaining destroyer ‘oh, he’s on the roof of the 3rd storey’ or whatever.

That’s still a hell of a lot better than the people who really want to cheat still being able to and those who don’t being penalised.

Besides it’s not really that helpful as the person who died usually has the opportunity to say something before they die unless killed from somewhere out of sight. So if they know it was a bloke on the roof of the 3 storey building then they could say it before they die. If they weren’t looking that way then they are none the wiser are they? People can also still get out a few words as they dies (usually swear words I’ll grant you) – but it’s not always a cut off from point of death is it. (Last Stand perk uses this fact for example).

Taking away from the majority because of the ill deeds of the few is obviously the policy now.

@ G1GAHURTZ: I a not buying the game but we all know how well this game will sell. That means it still affects me as people I would normally talk to I wont be able to because they will be on MW2. So they aren’t really punishing just the people who buy the game, they’re punishing anyone who knows people who have the game.

#26

G1GAHURTZ
02/11/09, 5:17 pm

Oh, ok, I see your point. If you’re in party chat 80% of the time then it looks like you won’t be able to talk to anyone playing MW2 now.

There’s only one thing to do then…

You’ll just have to buy the game!

Or just tell them to not play S&D. Unless its for the whole game but i doubt it.

So i got a question for you guys will you be doing the single player first or diving straight into the multiplayer?
I always tend to do single player first.

Single player gives you a feel for the controls and the weapons and the collision detection before you go online and get fucked side-ways by melee attacks and explosions that do damage way outside what could be considered reasonable damage radius to the untrained eye.

@The Hindle
If you have it on day one I reckon usual MP load issues may apply and SP will be the only option :) . I think starting SP is a good idea to get a feel for things and then dive into the MP. Nothing will help you more than getting out there and playing the maps.
