Tanaka: FFXIV beta will be Windows only

ffxiv

Square Enix’s Hiromichi Tanaka has revealed to Game-Watch that the beta for Final Fantasy XIV will be a Windows only affair.

The director for the MMO revealed that the beta will be closed at first and won’t be continuous, as the development team want to monitor things that are going on in the closed beta.

However, as the game nears a release, the beta will be opened up and will be a 24 hour affair. It is currently unknown if the beta will be coming to the PS3 down the line.

The game is due for launch next year on the PC and PS3.

Sony dev “unsuccessfully” tried to make GOWIII a FPS

godofwarIII3

We shit you not.

SCEA art director Ken Fieldman has admitted in a chat with CGSociety that he “unsuccessfully” tried to lobby God of War III as a First Person Shooter to game director Stig Asmussen.

“I tried unsuccessfully to convince [Director] Stig to make ‘God of War III’ a first-person shooter”, admitted Fieldman.

“Kratos could have some truly badass huge weapons that rip gods to shreds. Unfortunately he didn’t see the genius in the idea.”

Game is out in March 2010. You can find more through the link.

heroes-over-europe-img

Australian developer Transmission Games has laid off up to 20 staff members, according to a report on Gama.

Staff who were made redundant were only notified yesterday of the news.

EA being sued for unauthorized likeness use in Madden, Fight Night, NCAA

maddennfl101

According to a report on Kotaku, EA are being sued for unauthorized use of likenesses in EA Sports titles such as Madden NFL 09, NCAA and Fight Night Round 4.

The lawsuits come from Byron Bishop (NCAA), a licensing group for boxers known as Fighters Inc (Fight Night) and John “Big Dawg” Thompson (Madden), who is an unofficial mascot of the Cleveland Browns (we think) sitting in the stands of games for the Browns.

Sega: West wont get Bayonetta demo until near release, Japanese PSN gets it next week

bayonetta4

Sega has told Eurogamer that the West won’t be getting a Bayonetta demo until nearer it’s release in Q1 2010.

Sad faces? Not quite. Sega are releasing a taster of it on the Japanese PS Store next week. So turn that frown upside down and go nuts next week with Sarah Palin Bayonetta, as long as you have a JP PSN.

More through the link. It was due to release this month for PS3 and 360 in the West, but it got delayed. Japan still gets it this year though.

Square Enix: Nier: Gestalt to be international version, Japanese to get two versions

neirreplicant

Square Enix have said that the Japanese version of Nier for the Xbox 360 will be the international version of the game.

Simply put: Gestalt and Replicant will be released in Japan as two separate games for the 360 and PS3 respectively. But Gestalt will be released on the 360 and PS3 together elsewhere.

At least, that seems to be the assumption according to Andriasang‘s translation of the latest Famitsu Xbox 360, particuarly an interview with executive producer Yosuke Saito.

Saito also confirms that although there will be no co-op in the game, DLC is being considered.

Naughty Dog: “We would like” to work on Jak and Daxter PS3

jak and daxter

Naughty Dog’s Arne Meyer has revealed to EGTV that the studio would like to work on a PlayStation 3 version of Jak and Daxter. Massive fan demand for the game comes as the developer ramps up on work for Uncharted 2.

“Well we would like to be able to work on it”, said Meyer.

Although he does insist that – for now at least – Uncharted is the main priority at Naughty Dog.

“We definitely hear a lot from our Jak and even Crash fans from a long time ago, um, and we really hear those things and you know we’d love to be able to be working on a new Jak for them at some point so, that might be in the cards but right now we’re really sort of focused on working through [Uncharted].”

The duo have a new PSP game coming this year in The Lost Frontier, although that is being handled by High Impact Games.

New Super Mario Bros. ‘Demo Play’ doesn’t play for you after all

newsupermariobroswii

Remember that whole Demo Play thing that had hardcore Mario masters up in arms a couple months ago? Well, as it turns out, it might not be that big of a deal. According to a Nintendo of Europe product listing, Demo Play’s just a gentle push in the right direction – not an autopilot.

“New Super Mario Bros. Wii is also the first Nintendo game to feature a dynamic help system, which allows you to access a mode showing how a level can be completed if you are stuck. The best thing about this mode is that you are free to jump into the action you’re watching on screen at any time,” reads the listing.

Bottom line: you still have to do all the legwork. Fortunately, if you want to watch Mario do his hopping and bopping without your input, you’ve still got the animated classic that is the Super Mario Brothers Super Show to fall back on. Thank goodness for that.

Thanks, Siliconera.

PSN ‘Game Cards’ coming to NA, skipping UK

godcard

Retailers aren’t too fond of the PSP Go, and with good reason. After all, who needs crummy old brick-and-mortar when every game you could ever want lies at your fingertips? Joystiq cornered Sony with this pressing issue, and – shockingly enough – got a response.

Sony of America’s keeping retailers in its corner with a series of PSP “Game Cards,” which consist of download codes and – enticingly enough – some very revealing packaging. Yeah, Sony knows how we like it. Apparently, the cards are already in stores, with games like God of War: Chains of Olympus and Gran Turismo Portable representing the initial volley.

As for Sony of Europe, well, game cards aren’t in the, er, cards. For now, anyway.

“We don’t have any plans for vouchers/gift cards like this,” Sony of Europe said. “At the moment we are only selling the PSN vouchers of £20 and £50 for the UK.”

Matt Hazard returns (again) in “Blood Bath and Beyond”

matt_Hazard

Matt Hazard, the larger than life personality that powered parody shooter Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard, is shrinking down and making the jump to PSN and XBLA. This time, though, instead of yuckin’ it up to the tune of Gears of War, Hazard’s bringing his signature brand of humor to the realm of sidescrollers like Shadow Complex.

And really, with a title like “Blood Bath & Beyond,” how can you refuse? Bigger, better, and more badass? Sorry Cliffy — weak descriptors like that just won’t cut it anymore.

The press release is after the break.
