Ueda: “This generation is about expressing ideas”

uedaa

Speaking in the latest Famitsu (via 1Up), Team ICO head Fumito Ueda has said that the current generation of consoles is “about expressing ideas”.

Ueda, who is creating The Last Guardian for the PlayStation 3 currently, said:

“As a creator, technical skill is important, but I really feel like this generation is about expressing ideas, about what you do with the technology.

“I also got the impression that, instead of talking about what makes games innovative and so on, a lot of companies were pushing Western titles hard, positioning them as a new ‘genre’ for gamers to try out.”

He also admitted he was looking forward to Modern Warfare 2.

“It’s one of the few games, I think, that conjures up what’s going outside of the picture in your mind as well. I feel a serious sublime beauty in all of Infinity Ward’s FPSes.”

“new ‘genre’” more like alot of old junk!In fact I can’t even think of anything really new.

What a retarded thing to say. Seriously. Did he get laughed out of the room. It’s on par with saying “This generation is about making games that people like.”

There is more artistic expression within the medium in this generation, that much *is* true. It’s just buried under a landslide of generic trash.

Ueda is in a privileged position in that Sony allows Team Ico to pursue its own artistic vision without forcing any sort of mandate on them. Unfortunately, this isn’t a freedom that the majority of developers can afford themselves.

Ever notice the conection bewteen artistic expersion and the decline of the Japanesse game dev?

In the 8bit and 16 bit days JRPGS ruled. FF was godly. I played and own all of the Dragon Warriors. But as the PSone matured and the PS2 pushed graphics even further, the JRPGS on the whole declined. In terms of western apeal. Why? Because at this point Japanesse devs could artisticly exprese their visions. And in the west we now saw anoying 12 yr olds were we once saw just a “warrior/adventurer”. Busty 10 yr old looking girls, that would turn the head of every pediphile out there became the norm. Our parties went from being a group of young adventurers to straight up kids. Speaking of straight, the more the Japanesse can express themself artisiticly, the less we are sure if our main char is straight or gay, sometimes I am not even sure if said char is male or female.
So if these guys think its all about artistic Expersion they could see further decline across multi generes. Because it isn’t just jrpgs that suffer(but I used that example because that was prolly there biggest comodity). But look at sales of stuff like MGS vs Gears. Or the quality of(insert jp game name here) vs UC2.
In the end I think JP is done, have been for awhile now. No prob tho, if you still love jp games, just grab a DS or PSP and your good to go.
