Fable III to have microtransaction-based storefront

fable-iii-logo

During his recent BAFTA lecture, the ever-talkative Peter Molyneux announced that Fable III will include a microtransaction-based in-game shope.

Apparently, items like swords will run you little more than £1 a pop, while new areas (think Fable II’s DLC) will probably cost a bit more.

So, you’ve got all these swords and landmasses – now what? Well, Molyneux suggested that players might be able to purchase walkthroughs at the store as well. However, he emphasized that – as with many of his ideas – this one could be left on the cutting room floor long before Fable III hits shelves.

Thanks, That VideoGame Blog.

Reading this, it makes it sound like your buying the game in pieces rather than actually making it a one time purchase.

Could be. Take a look at what Microsoft’s doing with Fable II right now by releasing 1/5 of the game for free, and charging for the other pieces. My guess? They’ll probably try something similar with Fable III, in addition to a normal retail SKU.

This is all speculation on my part, though.

And we come to the heart of the beast.

Paying a dollar for a sword.. just like paying for hockey equipment in NHL 10.. EA and M$ both have sounded the death knell of gaming for sure with this “micro transaction” with the false pretense of being “dlc” bs.

LionHead should drop the idea for the final build, seriously its ok for packs like standard DLC but it’ll only annoy people in the end if they have to buy item by item.

Sorry but Sport games and games that can be exploited will be. ANy business will do it. Look at the Music games. They don’t offer much on the surface so they will nickle and dime you. If its a serious game like Fallout 3 then they actually work on thier DLCs.

Edit: Or even Valve. Look at those DLCs those are pretty damn good.

I hope that cutting room floor’s really big. And filled with tripwires.

This has all been taken massively out of context btw. At no point did PM say this was DEFINITELY going into Fable 3 and indeed the £1 thing was just a number he plucked out of thin air to illustrate an example he was talking about.

Well, on of the great things about capitalism is that if no one buys it they will never try it again.

I would like to say that I would never buy something, but I have ended up buying many more things for my avatar than I ever thought I would (a few Bioshock things, the guitar, several clothes based on games)…i guess a fool and his money are soon parted. =/
