It’s not ONLY an antipiracy move; they are going to save a crapload of cash and earn a lot aswell with this, if you ever use your brain to think above the picture, not just negative ramblings that make you look like an arse but since you life is pretty sad you could care less.

Kinda following on from the other thread with this. The point is that we don’t want to break the law to get what we really should have out the box. I want to buy this game and play online on the 32+ player servers, because I’m a big Battlefield fan and thus enjoy the larger, more hectic games. You can’t do that with peer to peer, which is by Battlefield on the consoles uses dedicated servers, IW is just cutting this out of the game so now there is no reason for me to buy this product. I don’t really care for the short single player campaign that was in CoD4 so I’d imagine I would be overjoyed by the one in MW2.

As Penny Arcade pointed out, Piracy is a fight between people who want to make money and people who want to steal games. The legitimate customers just get shafted in the crossfire.

Not really. Just as an example, CoD4 sold over 7 million copies. These people are a stone in the pond.

When people can use their own dedicated servers, they don’t have to go through the middle-man (Infinity Ward) to play the game with friends online.

This means they won’t need to register the game to play it online.

It’s the exact same reason why Blizzard chose not to give Starcraft 2 LAN support. It ensures that you have validate your copy of the game to enjoy it, which the company has every right to do.

It’s an anti-piracy move and nothing more.

If people are daft enough to purchase what is essentially the same game just tweaked alittle, then its their own fault.

having matchmaking systems is nothing but pure lazyness on the developers part. PC gamers are NOT console gamers and allowing players to create their own servers keeps the brand alive – look at the Battlefield series – Its still going strong, despite some fierce competition from CoD amongst others.

Its about time developers and publishers stopped treating PC gamers as second rate – there is more profit when a PC game is purchase, the PC install base is greater than the console base and PC gamers DO spend their money on stuff that isnt a shoddy port from console.

I am with you 100%. I see the same type of thing with my NCAA Football game. I hate it, I mean hate it when I spring for the new year version. But I do, they have most often put just enough into the game to make me want the update. And that is a sports game where they can’t even use player names(collage sport = not allowed, in case your eng and haven’t played it) to update it. But the new features keep it going. I really don’t like that. And to make it worse so many of these games have DLC upping the games price. If I bought all of the day one dlc for NCAA, I would be spending 60usd for the game disc, and another 50 for the DLC. 110usd for one game! Crazy. And then next year, the samething all over again. I didn’t buy the dlc btw, well not all of it.
CoD is gonna be the same thing. It would be better if at least MW and MW2 could play online together or at least the dlc map packs bought for one game could be used in the other. But Nope. CoD MW2 is gonna run 70usd, and then have a good three or four 10usd downloads.

Kind of getting out of hand really.

This is a bone of contention with yearly updates, particularly for a game like CoD. On the one hand, you have a dedicated userbase who enjoy everything the game has to offer, enjoy playing with a regular clan and discovering all the game has to offer.
On the other, regular updates mean that longevity and the sense of a ‘club’ is gone. The game is going to last 2 years, ignoring Treyarch’s output, tops. That maybe long enough for most, but how often can the quality of a game like Modern Warfare, (now it’s a game in it’s own right, I’m betting Kotick will pull a Guitar Hero), be maintained?
I realise it’s Activi$ion, so quality of gameplay rarely comes into it..
