Turn 10: It would be very difficult for another dev to replicate Forza 3 physics

forza33

Turn 10′s Dan Greenawalt says it would be “very difficult” for another development team to “replicate” what the firm has done with Forza Motorsport 3.

“I’ve got huge respect for Yamauchi and what the Polyphony Digital team does, they’re a great developer. But do I personally feel confident that it would be difficult for any other racing game to do this,” he told CVG. “We run our physics at 360Hz. I don’t know of any other game that does that. That takes a commitment to physics, not just about making sure you have beautiful graphics.

“Forza 2 had great physics and okay graphics. Now Forza 3 has great physics and great graphics, because we learned more about the box. But we still prioritize physics first, not graphics first. That is one of the differences.

“Gran Turismo is a great game and when it comes out I’ll play it. But I think that without the partnerships and without the commitment, it will be very difficult for another team to replicate what we’ve done.”

Oh boy. More through the link.

Removing the PR spin… each of these games have different strengths and weaknesses, from GRID to SHIFT to Forza to GT. We all know this, but it’s not going to stop the level of rabid anger that these sort of statements generally result in. :D

Few years later…

“Forza 3 had great physics and great graphics but Forza 4 has fantastic physics and fantastic graphics.” XD

“We run our physics at 360Hz. I don’t know of any other game that does that. ”

And I don’t know any person that knows what that means. :)

Also, the last bit of the quote reminds me of what Kanye West said.

I think PT nailed it. He’s saying (though his contrast diagramming is contradictory marketing nonsense) that Forza is as good as/better than GT because it goes way beyond in terms of physics, though it’s merely current-gen in graphics.

That’s a perfectly acceptable opinion…if it’s true, which we’ll find out.

Another day another turn 10 slighlty bullish pr statement. There’s still 2 weeks left too. What more can we expect?

And Kaz and PD will just sit there and take it, which is admirable…I guess they’re going to let GT5 do the talking.

A new God confirmed.

And Greenawalt knows at what rate the GT5 physics engine runs at *how*, exactly?

Ahh.. that’s right. He doesn’t. So comparing a 360Hz update rate with an unknown rate is just fucking ridiculous.

Developer nonsense like this should always be taken with a pinch of salt.

PD have no commitment? Riiiight.

Forza 3 looks like it’s going to be a great game, almost certainly the best racing sim so far this gen. So let it speak for itself and stop coming up with more full-of-shit and made-up-bullshit comments every day.

“Forza 2 had great physics and okay graphics. Now Forza 3 has great physics and great graphics, because we learned more about the box. But we still prioritize physics first, not graphics first. That is one of the differences.

So you didn’t prioritise graphics on this one? Sure ’bout that?

It doesnt matter how fast the physics engine runs, if the physics engine is as unrealistic as the videos imply it will just run fast but unrealistic. Video of the porsche(I think it was) bouncing upside down along the track shows this off wonderfully.

I think it might be a little more important how the game handles physics when the cars are on their wheels. :)

He speaks the truth. :)

Oh, bullshit. Forza 3 looks very nice, but I don’t see reason another developer wouldn’t be able to match anything coded within it.

“Imma gonna let you finish Kaz, but Forza 3 was the best game of all time.

“Of all time.”

SHIFT actually runs their physics engine at 400hz and just like Forza 3, it also features tire deformation.
