Don’t want to derail the topic, but:
“self-admitted fanboy slant”
What kind of self-admitted fanboy slant, dear Sir? Like when then reviewer admits that he’s a Gran Turismo fan by heart? It hardly registers as a slant in a (positive) Forza review, I suppose.

well someone still owes me an explanation for the fact that a car racing sim with worse looking cars and lower resolution than 2 year old GT5P, no night races, questionable handling, not so hot damage modeling and no weather effects can get nigh perfect scores.

GT5 take note of that career mode. I still think GT5 will be better than this.. or at least I hope it will.

Other than the G4 one you posted.

Ah, you see. A 5/5 isn’t a 10/10. There’s a clear difference. In my head, anyway

You’d be amazed at the endless arguments that go on in editorial teams about scoring systems. Is 5/5 the same as 100%? Why mark out of 20 instead of 10?

5/5 is marked as a 10 on Metacritic though…

I always like the 10 / 10 (or 5 / 5) ones because you can argue that a game really got 9.6 / 10 (or whatever) then got rounded so as to avoid the “100% = perfect game” discussions.

“well someone still owes me an explanation for the fact that a car racing sim with worse looking cars and lower resolution than 2 year old GT5P”
Wrong. It looks much better than GT5:P and also doesnt tear like a bastard.
“no night races”
Which really have a significant effect on a race game, right? Wrong.
“questionable handling”
You meant to say ‘The best handling model of any console racer by a significant margin’.
“not so hot damage modeling”
Visual portion only. Damage still has the appropriate effect on performance.
‘and no weather effects’
Weather would be nice, I’ll admit.
It gets the scores it does because it’s a superb racing sim. It looks beautiful and more importantly it plays even better than it looks.
Gran Turismo scores on looks alone, because frankly every GT since GT3 has been just a reskin. GT5:P and I expect GT5 are last-gen games with nice graphics.
They are the games that don’t deserve good scores.

figure of speech, jeez.
Oh well, guess I’ll have to try it myself eventually if it really is as good as everyone says it is. Demo didn’t do much for me, but I guess it was missing the customisation and online modes.
If you don’t like the game, don’t buy it.
way to jump to conclusions.

Gadzooks: for what it’s worth, I am not too hot on GT5(P) either, but I did enjoy it a tad more than the Forza 3 demo, especially graphically. I clearly see and admit that Forza 3 seems to have the nicer tracks, but I think if it comes to cars, GT5 simply can’t be beat.

@lk
Worse looking cars but better looking everything else.
Lower resolution but a much more consistent 60fps and none of the notable screen tearing from GT5P
Questionable handling? Are you questioning why you wheels don’t squeal like a piggie at every single corner like in GT?
Not so hot damage modelling? Well it’s got one for a start. It’s more about how it affects the car than the visual damage. Visually it looks similar to what we have seen of GT5.
I did like the GT series, I bought and played GT5P. In terms of pure car porn GT is still the king, but in just about every other are Forza has overtaken it. That and the simple facts below …
GT4 (2004)
Forza (2005)
Forza 2 (2007)
Forza 3 (2009)
GT5 (2010)

Same reason why Resistance 2 was constantly compared to Gears 2, same reason that Killzone was supposed to be the Halo killer.
We’re lucky there’s no Gears coming out this year, otherwise the Uncharted 2 posts/threads would be… wow, I can’t even fathom how bad.

For the simple reason that PS3 owners are a very hurt bunch of people, having had their beloved platform fall from an unassailable lead to a firm last place, and feel the need to lash out at everything that isnt PS3 related, and naturally people will defend the things they enjoy when challenged.
Someone says to me ‘GT is better then Forza’ in a Forza thread and I’ll list the facts that prove them wrong. Simple.
These assholes know when they are deliberately provoking. There’s a time and place to discuss things with like-minded people, and it isnt in the review thread of a competitor product.

I played the demo, which had a default difficulty of easy, so i thought i’d wack it on medium for my first play of the demo……the bloody auto braking is turned on on medium, i couldn’t believe it!! what has happened to the world, when you play a racing simulator on medium difficulty and you don’t even have to brake. This saddens me.

To add to that, go look through the latest 360 and PS3 exclusive news threads. You will see a lot of PS3 tard comments in the 360 threads and surprisingly few unpleasant comments in PS3 threads.
It’s a small cross-section of the console owner demographic I know but, and yes this is a bit of a generalisation, PS3 owners are without doubt the most vocal, aggressive and downright stupid of the internet mobs.
It’s partly because of this contemptable fanbase that I am steering clear of PS3 ownership as I like to be involved in the online community.

For best results: Set to ‘hard’, adjust AI level to required difficulty, disable traction control.

@GHz: You can change as many settings as you want. You can have medium AI and all assists off (or on) if you like.

Forza 3 seems to be taking a step towards greater accessibility this time round. See rewind option. However in a driving sim braking is one of the trickiest parts to master. It’s not auto-braking on normal, but braking assist I would guess, so you still have to hit it at round about the right time. As long as the options are there then it doesn’t make much difference to me.

No problem, it was kind of a rhetoric question but badly put. Not sure you can claim which side of the two evils are worse, i’ve seen equal rubbish from both parties. But hey lets not argue about that either.
@on topic
I used to own a 360 but sold after purchase of a top end pc and still have a ps3. FM3 and the new episode of GTA IV are tempting. I shouldn’t have sold the thing tbh.
Does the camera in FM3 remain static? I’ve played a lot of NFS shift and GTR evolution and in both cases it adds a lot of immersion (nfs shift is overkill though).

There certainly isn’t much noticable camera shake. Certainly nothing like you get in NFSS (which I think gives it the most immersive in car experience of any racing game yet, btw).
IGN US has a video review with loads of in car views if you want to see how it looks first hand.

thanks. I should have said in-car camera. I’ve looked at a fair few fm3 videos to date (gamersyde in particular), seems to be some movement. but I guess I’ll have a look at some video reviews this evening.
NFS:S while compltely frustrating in handling (veyron, carrera gt etc are so bouncy it’s not funny) but I agree that some elements add a great deal of immersion which if you get used to, cause a flat feeling elsewhere. Though NFS:S used too much blur imo.

I’m a big fan of the immersion in NfSShift and thought Forza 3 would leave me cold as a result. From demo play I’d say they’ve certainly worked on this area, it moves around a bit more than Forza 2 and as such feels a lot more lively. Even the slower cars have a more immersive feel to them.

I wanted to post some sense to the first kind of fanboy post here….
But it seems worthless now.
Just recognise that Forza does things differently to Gran Turismo. It’s just different. And it’s great by the sounds of it. It’s a much more Western experience. Taking the some difficulty and frustration out of the experience, and streaminglining it. Also highlighting user expression.
It’s not worth comparign it to GT5 right now, becuase a bit of competition might have chnaged their tactics, but goign by older GT’s, it’s a much more archaic and Japanese experience. Highlights on the looks, the car library, the collect-a-thon.
Neither has more of a highlight on the ‘sim’ aspect, they just do it differently.

I think given his previous post the latest one from lk was dripping with sarcasm. It does highlight a key differentiator between MS & Sony approaches this generation though. MS has bought in a lot of exclusives, Sony concentrated on internal development. Very different approaches but arguably in sales terms MS has worked best so far. Sony’s may well reap more benefits longer term. Sony also went for a lot of new IP and neglected big franchises it should have been more focused on. Going for new IP is laudable but they should have ensured the big hitters like God of War and GT were out last year at the latest.
I think given the difficulties in getting the most out of the PS3 the Sony approach was possibly the best for them though. Assuming there is a lot of collaboration and communication between the internal teams.

MS has bought in a lot of exclusives
I would say funded, rather than bought. I think that due to the relative ease to make nice looking games on the 360, a lot of studios can spend that money on things they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to afford. Hell, everyone should be somewhat thankful for MS throwing all that money around. Who knows if we had a PS3 version of Fallout 3 if it wasn’t for the moneyhats Bethesda got to release the DLC on 360 first.
