Infinity Ward: Activision wanted more WWII games instead of Modern Warfare

modernwarfare2

Infinity Ward bossman, Vince Zampella, has told the Official Playstation Magazine that originally, Activision did not want Call of Duty 4 to be a Modern Warfare and had been holding the reins on a more “modern” type of war experience for quite some time.

“With Call of Duty 2, we were dead set against it being World War 2,” said Zampella. “But Activision really wanted it, the compromise sort of being that we’d get some dev kits for consoles in exchange for doing a World War 2 game. We always wanted to be on consoles and Activision saw us as more of a PC developer.

“And something I’ll add to that, Activision also did not want Modern Warfare. They thought working on a modern game was risky and [thought], ‘oh my god you can’t do that, it’s crazy!’ They were doing market research to show us we were wrong the whole time.”

Of course, in the end, MW1 sold 14 million copies. So, there ya go.

So basically, publishers have no idea what it’s customers want?! Imagine that.

Good thing they opted for Modern then.

ps. Given the advert now displayed on VG247 background, I hope I dont see articles biased towards a certain gaming platform :(

Oh and market research is bullshit.

@Red, I wouldn’t worry too much, I think these guys have pretty good ethics.

Either that or I’m still obsessed with getting my hands on a Stephany Nunneley bobble-head.
(That didn’t sound right.)

Activision’s approach has clearly been to milk franchises and aim at knownn demographics only. Really terrible for innovation and any form of risk taking.

And despite the success of MW (and soon to come success of MW2) I don’t see them changing their tune anytime soon.

I wouldn’t put it past Activision to purposely start World War III just so that they had a new unique selling point for Call of Duty 8.

ummm.. Game companies DID NOT screw Wall Street… All companies are about Money, some just do it better than others. I personally have never had any issues with Activision and don’t understand the hate. They are no worse than rest of game publishers. Don’t blame them, blame the gamers. Gamers for some reason don’t buy games direct from developer they need huge advertising campaigns to tell them what to buy. I would be more than happy to DL games directly from a developer… but it doesn’t work that way.
