EyePet – 15-minute play movie and photos of final version

eyepet3

A final version of PlayStation Eye game EyePet turned up this morning in an amazing expanding pop-up box thing containing the camera, final code and the little paw pad used to control objects on the screen.

I filmed myself playing it with my daughter, with support from my twin sons, for about 15 minutes – get the movie and photos of the pack after the break.

You’ll see the game show you how to set up your room, fix the lighting, how to position the camera, and so on. You’ll also here me say, “Come on Mr Egg.” This isn’t usual. The video shows the first stages of your little monkey’s life, with you hatching him, warming him up, giving him a name and helping him bounce around on a trampoline.

To be honest, it’s the cutest game in the world. Ever. Hit the link to see why.

I’m not even remotely interested in the ‘game’, but can’t help but watch the latest episode of ‘at home with the Garratts’. :-D

Ha ha!

I think one of my girls asked for this for Christmas, that’s my excuse for watching.

It’s interesting, tech-wise. I can’t help but think it’s totally pointless on the PS3, though – if this had been on the DS or the Wii it’d have probably sold a fuck-ton.

Just all of this is class.

I reckon it’s for Pat’s benefit mainly haha. I love it when your little girl walks off and tells you what to be doign while she looks after her brother.

As Blerk said, at home with the Garratts.

So, as I expected, no chance to use this with my beamer. EyePet won’t work in environments with little to no light… :-(

I also like the way each ‘boop!’ noise makes it seem like you have censored the swearing.

@Blerk
You are kind of missing the point there.

Didn’t expect to be quite so impressed with this. Could do very well and make the PS3 a much more viable young family purchase. Rare to see big titles aimed a this young an age group too.

I have to admit, the camera video quality is very good.

This looks lovely. Will be great for my child when he comes along, but there might be something better when he’s able to understand what he’s doing.

This game – this Wii-shovelware-flavoured piece of shit – is what 8 Days and Getaway were cancelled/postponed in favour of.

Stamp on it. Stamp on it repeatedly.

Actually, these are the questions which need to be asked. Can you stamp on it? Push it over? Poke it in the eye? Withhold food until it dies? :-D

Your kid on the left was totally mesmerised :p

I’d love to have a go on this with my girlfriend. I reckon it’d amuse her for an hour or so :D

SCEE’s just asked if I want to do a dev interview on this. Stick your questions in here and I’ll ask them next week.

-Do you feel it was worth stopping work on 2 ‘core’ games to make Eyepet?

Pat, please ask them about environmental light conditions for EyePet.
As I said earlier in this thread, my PS3 is hooked up to a beamer/projector and I’m afraid EyePet will not work with this setup.

… and how long is the USB-cable? This could also be a problem with beamers, because in a normal setup the PS3 and the beamer are placed together _behind_ the player and the EyeCam used with EyePet should be in front of you.

I guess its worth asking if The Getaway 2 will ever get put back into production. I would sugest asking about 8 Days but being a new IP would make that abit less likely.

@ Gekidami and Panipal2005
The original Getaway was crap. I’m quite happy a sequel was postponed for this, as it actually looks like a lot of fun that family can have together if their kids are little.

As for 8 days, never heard of it, so not bothered at all. Uncharted 2 is just around the corner anyway.

The Getaway had some terrible, clunky controls but apart from that it was a solid game with an awesome plot. Definitely worth a sequel (note that i never played Black Monday).

I really can’t think of any clever questions. :(

Lol other then stuff they probably wont answer about 8 Days and The Getaway its hard to think of anything really interesting, EyePet is pretty straight forward really.

Will they be doing an ‘adult’ version with a naughty nudey lady and a variety of pretend implements for you to play with together? Like feather dusters or bottles of milk? For instance.

I’ll get me coat.

About 8 days and Gateway, a guy from studio london respond at the question, those games are in pause in 50% of progress.

Looks good! I may have to get this for my 2 year old. Thanks for sharing! Honestly, do you think your daughter will enjoy it for some time, or will she lose interest fast? Just trying to determine if it;s worth buying.

Thats interesting though i see that he also says that they have a new project underway for their next game. Shame they’re not just continuing on 8 Days and the Getaway 2.

But its good to know they havnt actually been canned.

Got Black Monday, never played it, oh the glory days of having a vast disposable income, the wife soon put a stop to that, now i can’t get her off Everybody’s Golf:World Tour.
She’s excited, there’s a new costume pack coming soon. ffs.

It’s not as simple as cancelling two core games to make EyePet. If Eight Days and the Getaway had been cancelled, I’m sure EyePet would still have been made.

And it looks charming. Almost certainly better than the Getaway would have turned out (the first two were awful) anyway.

Any chance of multiple creature things on screen at once?

edit: and if so, can you have someone elses pet join in, like if 2 kids have the game can they play with both their pets at once on one system?

Activities designed for multiple pets could be cool.

@DGB
Considering it’s only £17.99 (without camera, £29.99 with) I will probably find myself getting it.
The bizarre thing is, it has trophies.

Considering it’s more pet simulator than game why does it have this facility? Could possibly be the easiest platinum anyone could ever get. Ever.

Has anyone who is mad that 8 days got cancelled/paused actually watched the video of it? Its basically Uncharted: Urban. As for The Getaway, good riddance. The first one was terrible. Driving, shooting, walking, everything was terrible (What does plot matter when the game aspect of your videogame is atrocious?).

As for my question: Will it be able to grow, ala Tomogachi. If so, does player input/interaction have any effect? Can we permanently affect temperament, size, habits, etc.?

Some questions were already asked in that link Herlock posted, like will there be any other creatures? The dev says that right now nothing else is planned. As for having more then one EyePet on screen he says that its something they’re thinking of adding.
