Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada’s told Reuters that Final Fantasy XIII will sell more than 6 million units worldwide, beating global Dragon Quest IX shipments.

FFXIII releases exclusive for PS3 in Japan this December, to be followed by a PS3 and 360 launch in the US and Europe early next year.

Thanks, Kotaku.

Maybe, maybe not. FFXII only managed about 5 million and the PS2 had a much higher install base at that point. Of course, it was pretty late in the day for the PS2… FFX did nearly 8 million.

It’ll be very interesting to see the PS3/360 split in the West. PS3 owners will obviously get the PS3 version, multi-console owners should probably pick up the PS3 version too… easy win?

6 million is not that much if what you say is true Blerk. 8 million for FFX thats a lot. ITs been how many years since a release of a new gen FF? I think it is a very obtainable goal especially with it being on two consoles in the west.

The last ‘new gen’ FF was FFX back in 2001. Historically the first one of the generation always seems to do ‘best’ – FFVII did nearly 10 million but the PSOne follow-ups only managed 8 and 5 respectively. FFX did 8, X-2 did 5 and XII did 5 too. So… 6 is probably realistic.

This is probably the only multi-format game I’m currently debating to get on my PS3 (only exclusives so far), but it certainly won’t be a day-one purchase anyhow (I’m not even sure I’ll play it through, this being my first FF game).

So I can afford to wait and see how each version is reviewed and/or which will hit the bargain bins earlier/harder etc.

Theoretically the PS3 version should be the one to get if you have the choice, given that it was created with the PS3 in mind. Should make for an interesting Digital Foundry head-to-head, though.

it’ll do 6 million. Might take more then a year but it’ll do it.

agreed with Blerk, and FF7 sold about 10 millions in like 8 years. say, 9 just couln’t sell as much.

I think a lot of people were turned away from XII because it mixed things up a bit. Some people didn’t like it (note: we call those people ‘idiots’).

People prefer the neon-emo-androgynous-anime Final Fantasy games over anything in Ivalice.

I don’t mind them mixing stuff up a bit. In fact I prefer it. However, I also prefer it if ‘mixing it up’ doesn’t equate to ‘making it a bit shit and boring’ like they did with XII.

    :-D
