Natal-controlled Guitar Hero? “Likely,” says Red Octane

Guitar Hero may have a hardware-less future, if comments made by Red Octane president and co-founder Kai Huang to DigitalSpy are to be believed.

“We’ve definitely been evaluating Microsoft’s Natal technology along with a lot of other different technologies that could enhance the Guitar Hero playing experience,” Huang said.

“Natal is very interesting because there’s so many different things you can do with it, whether it’s the motion detecting, maybe sensing how you’re playing, or the ability to use it for interactivity purposes and taking advantage of it for party purposes…

“We’re evaluating it, and I think it’s likely that sometime in the future we’ll have those technologies integrated into our games.”

Huang’s comments come after Acti boss Bobby Kotick said recently that Guitar Hero games may soon not need a console. All that’s left to get rid of now is the game itself. Imagine: you pay Bobby money, and you consume music without having to press any buttons or hold a plastic guitar. You just “hear” it.

Bet that’s roasting your goose, non?

Thanks, 1UP.

It didn’t look fast enough for something thar requires that much precission. They should make a BIG delay improvement for that.

Until I play it for myself I won’t form any opinion.

Plus you’d have to be facing the screen the whole time, surely? So that it could pick up your finger placement. If this tech is developed fully (and I’m sure it will be) then it could be superb for stuff like guitar training. So you could have a real guitar and the camera would be able to pick up exactly what you’re doing and if you’re doing it right or wrong. I doubt Natal will be able to achieve this.

It would if you focussed the camera right in on your hands… it wouldn’t be able to from long range. You wouldn’t need Natal either, it could be done with a normal camera for something as simple as finger placement.

Your fingers cant move as fast without an anchor (i.e. guitar neck) to propel them off either, it’s not just the hardware limitations that would affect speed, the lack of the fisherprice guitar will actually slow your left hand down.

Plus the complete lack of tactile feedback from the buttons would leave you entirely reliant on the screen to know if you actually hit a note.

    Methinks bad idea.

Mmm. Air guitar game would be such a hit at least in Finland. We even have Air Guitar World Championships in here, in addition to Wife Carrying World Championships and a few other über-fun(ny) competitions. :)

If you don’t know, playing air guitar has nothing to do with playing music. It’s more about dancing and acting. Maybe Natal could be used for that, maybe not. Time will tell.

It could be used to pose your avatar on screen. Then again, most people satnd dead still staring slack jawed at the pretty colours.

Maybe if it *is* Air Guitar Hero it won’t be the traditional Guitar Hero gameplay at all, rather points will be scored on how much of a fanny you can make yourself look in the duration of a song.

Extra points if you break shit.

i already feel pretty stupid strumming on a plastic guitar, strumming air might be a bit much.
