Infinity Ward gets muddled on Modern Warfare 2 name fiasco
Seriously. Read this. It’s from an Joystiq interview with Infinity Ward lead multiplayer designer Todd Alderman on the question of what’s been going on with Modern Warfare 2′s indecision between having a Call of Duty moniker and not.
So. Why?
Well there are a lot of different factors involved, but we wanted to make sure, and I tried to state this at the beginning, that this is a different game. I mean it is not … it has got 2 on it obviously, but it is not just a sequel. It is not just another Call of Duty game. It is a big new thing and we want people to associate it with Modern Warfare 2. And it is the same story, so it is in the Call of Duty universe.
So messaging it both ways, I think it’s helpful. People that are in the know, know what Modern Warfare 2 is. People that know what Call of Duty is might not necessarily get it in a way, but establishing that identity and making sure that this is Modern Warfare 2. It is not just Call of Duty blah, blah, blah. It is Modern Warfare 2. And then having the Call of Duty … we are not denying it is Call of Duty.
Right? Right. The game’s out on November 11.

They should really just admit that they were shocked hardly anyone seemed to know what it was without the CoD prefix.

I could barely make out anything coherent in that pair of paragraphs. The guy seems massively conflicted about this whole mess. Its like they’re afraid of confusing the branding but at the same time they want to separate themselves from the CoD brand as being better than the default CoD games. “We are CoD but were aren’t cause were better than the normal CoD”!
Personally, I think they’re a bit full of themselves and want to be recognized as being better than the guys who put out CoD games on the off years and while understandable, its a bit dumb. Just call it CoD, add the MW2 on the end and give the consumer credit that if we’re buying your game then we already know who is who and what is what.

That has to best the most incoherent gibberish I have ever heard anyone spout in an interview.
Ever.

I’m more shocked by something else … the fact that they feel/pretend mw2 is a whole new beast and different game , with so many new things …
Maybe i’m crazy or something , cause i aint seeing that much of them .

In other words, as far as anyone concerned with the creating the game was concerned, it wasn’t Call of Duty.
As far as anyone concerned with selling the game is concerned, it is Call of Duty, inextricably so, especially since that name test result came in; its very pores secrete Duty.
Of course, given that Call of Duty has little to do with Call of Duty, it’s hard to see why those of us who follow game news and were going to find and buy The Game even if it was called “The Adventures of Darkwing Duck” should care less.

They’re tired of Treyarch trading on their good name and want to reclaim their IP.
You can’t say that out loud so it gets confusing.

“But, this one goes to 11.”
That’s pretty much what I understood from the statement.

While watching a MW2 developer interview on GT, I was concerned about the fluffyness of some responses, and how many questions were being dodged. Looks like there’s more of that flavour, here.
