Sega to release 2D, HD Sonic in 2010
Sega associate brand manager, Ken Balough, has confirmed to Gamespot that a new Sonic game is in development – currently branded Project Needlemouse – that will feature 2D, HD graphics. There’s a teaser trailer after the break – it’s out next year.
The game’s concept is a response to “old-school Sonic fans” who “have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay,” said the staffer.
“Speed returns in an all new 2D adventure built from the ground up,” says the movie.
Amazing. It had better be.

That’s nice.
Let’s see if they approach it as they do with most updates, i.e. so it ticks every box to ensure it fits in with the current gen design wave:
a) Badly constructed co-op mode.
b) Re-painted graphics by A-level grade artists.
c) Completable without losing a single life.
d) Online leaderboards which are a bastard to check (see XBLA Outrun for details).

It also better be a downloadable title for $15 or less.

That silhouette looks like the image from the first game’s start screen ( http://www.consoleclassix.com/info_img/Sonic_The_Hedgehog_GEN_ScreenShot1.jpg ) so I can only assume that this is going to be a HD remake of the original game.
Lets hope it’s just not a flat out graphical upgrade, and that the evolve the gameplay to boot… just without werehogs or other gimmicky ideas.
This could be cool. Can’t wait.

“New” 3D adventure “built from the ground up” certainly doesn’t suggest a remake. I think it’s just going to be a return to old-school Sonic dashy-leapy goodness.
Fingers crossed, anyway.

I think you mean 2D.
It could very much be a remake while still evolving the concept, much in the same way Bionic Commando: Rearmed was a remake but was structurally entirely different to the original.

I think it’s a great idea, but I agree (and fear) that SEGA sometimes really likes to screw things up… I guess we’ll just have to wait and hope that they don’t.

That’s a great teaser, regardless of how good the actual game turns out to be.
