@SticKBoy
MS have a very (exceptionally) low limit on the size of game patches, hence they are always very quick.. The flip side is that they are limited in what they can do with a "patch" in terms of adding new features - but the speed is great. There is also a bizarre limit on the number of these patches you can have on your system. So if you regularly cycle through more games which have patches than the limit then you will be reapplying them all the time. Not a big deal as they download so quickly.

It's a great example of the sort of thing which MS thought through and had designed into the system from the start.

@ Gekidami: Please see post # 40 & 42 regarding your comment - I'm not complaining about patches (far from it), just surprised in the quality disparity in implementation between X360 and PS3, plus how its not really been highlighted to the public. I'm amazed it hasn't annoyed more people, but then I suppose you only really notice the difference if you have extensive experience with both consoles.

@ Phoenix: By "local downtime", I actually meant a catch-all phrase for all install issues relating to firmware updates, game patches and mandatory installs plaguing the PS3. I didn't actually mean server downtime, and in my experience that's a much or little an issue on both platforms equally.

As far as online service downtimes go XBL beats PSN hands down this year (and possibly since the begining of this gen).

Dont really understand how anyone could complain about patches, or as they're also known as DEVS SUPPORTING THEIR GAMES AFTER RELEASE.

Local Downtime? I dunno maybe I haven't been on when this "downtime" happens but I have never seen it except when the last patch went Live. You have to figure also PSN is free where XBL you have to pay for( if want to get into the fun stuff) That subscription goes to maintenance of those servers. Probably why Sony obviously caps the bandwidth of their servers so we can't download at higher speed of Xbox live. I don't see these small things as a huge problem hell I have had the 360 since launch then got a RROD with that and bought an Elite (Still had one RROD) but once I got my PS3 I have not touched that system since Fallout 3.

But that's the thing - Microsoft was quite rightly hauled over the coals for RRoD, which has been comprehensively fixed with the release of the X360 Jasper chip-set, so new customers need never worry.

Sony's "local downtime" problem is an ongoing matter that affects each and every PS3 user, new and old alike. This knowledge has definitely affected my purchasing decision - I'm surprised Microsoft haven't exploited it as I bet I'm not the only one who'd want to avoid this.

I have 7 games so far for the PS3 if I were to round the number of installs, patches, firmware update would be maybe 4-5 hours I just got it in February. 5 hours whoopidy do da. Cry me a river. If it took an entire freaking day that would be something to bitch about but this is not a deal breaker its not something for Microsoft to wave at especially since they have RROD out the wazoo. They both can mud sling at each other all day. Something like this is very minute.

I'll agree with Stickboy and say that the total amount of downtime waiting for the ps3 to get ready to let you play (firmware, patches, mandatory installs) totally dwarves that on the 360 and is a noticeable pain in the hole. Maybe if you only have one or two games it isn't an issue but for some it is.

No fanboyism, just the comments from someone who has maybe 10 times in the last year saw an anticipated hour long session reduced to almost nothing.

But that's not exactly right, is it? there may have been only a couple of firmware updates, but plenty more patches and mandatory installs. From my own personal experience this year, these have negatively impacted play sessions on a PS3 far, far more than on X360. I'm surprised Xbox's marketeers haven't done more to highlight this disparity.

<i>"I can’t believe I just read that installing patches and firmware updates, things that enhance and stabilize your games of all things, should have more outrage associated with it."</i>

It's only outrageous (IMHO) because of the huge quality difference in the way this beneficial feature is handled between the two rival platforms. Nobody's saying that patches and updates aren't a good thing (they clearly are), I'm just surprised that nobody makes a bigger deal out of the PS3's comparatively poor implementation of a feature that's so unobtrusive on X360.

I swear, I've downloaded 3 FW updates in total since obtaining my PS3. Which have taken 10 mins to DL/UD each. Really, this is getting a little rediculous now.

Got mine yesterday. It's currently hooked up with an HDMI cable from one of my Elite's and it's wired (360 cable again!) to my router, because I'm not sure how many wireless connections it supports. I'm already using two.

I had to go to Maplin today to get an optical switcher and another optical cable for the PS3, but only realised when I got back that I actually needed another one to join the two to my surround system, so I'll have to go back again tomorrow.

I found the XMB functional, but nothing special. It lacks a lot of features that XBL has, and the PSN Store is a bit lightweight too. It seems a bit odd that there isn't a section for demos and that everything seems to be bunched together...

I got CoD4 with it, because there aren't any PS3 exclusives that I'm interested in, and I wanted to test the difference between PSN and XBL when it comes to my favourite online game. I have to say that XBL is much more stable so far. Of the games that I've had, probably most have been laggy, although I managed to get 3 good quality connection games in a row this morning.

I tried the KZ2 demo, but I didn't like it. I understand what people are talking about now when they complain about too much recoil...

I almost had to choose another username as well, until I realised that the G1GAHURTZ that I registered way back in 2007 was still mine! I also found out that someone else has registered 'G1GAHURTZ_PS3', believe it or not.

Overall, I'm quite pleased with it. I don't really intend on buying any games for it that I can get for my 360, because I still like collecting gamerpoints, so it should be an exclusive games only console for me, but as long as Sony keep churning them out, I should have plenty to choose from.

I would just like a choice: a) no install, long loading time, b) install, shorter loading time.

Then I've got nothing to moan about.

@ jkoz - I take your point. But when I buy a new game, I want to play it immediately, not faff around due to a poorly designed OS or whatever the reason is. I'm just amazed that this flaw hasn't drawn more flack from consumers.

I've had a PS3 for almost three years. I've had no issues with updating games or installing data. Some people need instant gratification, but I can take ten minutes and have a sandwich or something. Metal Gear Solid 4 is one of my favorite games of all time, and the install time is a break from the game for me. I have a 360 (since launch, so longer than my PS3) and the contrast between the systems does not bother me in the slightest.

I know it is superbly done. MGS was my first experience with the PS3 so I was spoiled in that and every game I get that installs I expect the same...too bad no one has gone to that level yet..

Alright. I guess I'm just different.

Edit: Again, thinking about it, Snake smoking may have made the wait easier for me. It was so beautiful, I had to light one up for myself.

When I'm gaming, I want to be gaming rather than sitting around waiting for installs. I don't get enough time for it as it is.

As I said before, I wouldn't have minded so much but having to do the installs a second time was really annoying.

Were the installs for MGS really that bad for people? I mean, I bought the game, knowing full well about how 'long' they would be, counted the minutes, and they were 10, 5, 3 and 2 minutes long for each chapter. I don't know, maybe I've gained patience since becoming a father, but that doesn't seem anywhere near as bad as people make it out to be. The way people seethe over these installs, its kind of O.D.

Edit: Now that I take the time to think about it, its most likely due to the anti-piracy security Sony has in place. Checking and re-checking the system for unsanctioned firmware and whatnot.
