Then there are companies like Rocksteady and Valve who release free DLCs. Can't say much about Rocksteady as of yet but Valve has put out great DLCs that are FREE and are better than most DLCs.

Overall I think we have to make the decision of whats a good DLC and whats a bad one, if we will pay for it or not get it at all, thats what it boils down to. DLCs are now a standard it seems and it will not stop, If people will pay for X costume why give it out for free?

But they are not , every but a select few are doing it .You cant really point the finger at a black sheep when the whole sheep pen is mostly composed of it . Okay there is that dark one with red eyes named activision that catch the eye , and the fat black one in the back called EA ... but that's pretty much it .

Hell you wanna know who are the best recent fighting games out there ? SF4 and Blazblue probably ... and what would they sell ? colors and costumes , a usually de facto component of any fighting game

I know i'm stubborn or call me a paranoid , but no , i see the inherent nature of DLC as a bad thing period . The only good ones are basically what we used to call just addons , and were the same idea of additional content that could make a mini or half the original game itself , at a cheaper price ... it only has gone digital this era .

However the true bulk of dlc comes from the very same rotten apple that spawned the infamous horse armor . Hell it's no luck or coincidence it was one of the first .

The concept came to life with the idea of selling previously free content .

All "haters of old" predicted pretty much every steps of the way publishers would find way to produce and force more dlc . And again there is very little vote involved when to even simply enjoy some games with other , you do need that so called optional feature . They are only beginning to make dlc a basically "essential extra" , and people are laping it up , and thus forcing the rest around them who wouldnt follow suit .

Hell we now even see people getting sad when a studio announce there wont be dlc for a game .

Anyway enough with my rant , enjoy the paid freedbies and very rare good packs of content :p

I agree with you for the most part Neo but thats the company decision that are putting them out, its up to us to decide whats a bad DLC (Horse armor anyone?) but in turn what is a good one? We decide what is bad or good by our currency. I have for one learned that do not buy Capcom DLC and Lionhead so far. I don't play Activision games for the obvious reasons.

Rockstar on the other hand can obviously make very good DLC.

If a developer wants to make a half baked game then release DLC to make more money, they will be shooting themselves in the foot and will be losing their fan base.

Ok sure GTA's dlc is one of the few good ones , but let's be honest here ... they didnt commit to produce good dlcs , just to produce dlcs for every titles no matter what .

And when we are frank and honest we already knews what kind of crap awaits precisely in games of lesser caliber . Content purposely removed from games , content already on the disc but deactivated , or stuff that could or should have been freebies , but is too juicy to not benefits from .

The very few good dlc packs are stuff that could have been addons at easily the same price or close and dont really offset the damage done by 99% of the others .

I , of course await the eternal "you dont have to buy it" wich is a load of crap . When at least half of the population of say a popular fps , or your friend list get the dlc , how do you think that affects you ?

Will you try pretending to be some rebel or che guevara ? No you'll get it usually . why ?

Because not getting those infamous map packs will cut your access to at least half servers , prevents you to play with your friends or to be a competitive player in tournaments and such .

You dont have to buy that filthy color pack or costume pack for your fighting games characters ? Who are we kidding ? How many plays fighting games without access to at least a few colors or alternative costumes you'd enjoy ? Especially if they cut it off and restrain selection , knowing a lot of people want those kind of stuff ?

I'm sorry but i agree with Syrok here that DLC are quite hateful and evil . I truly despite them since they are not truly always unavoidable , and most of all since , even if you were to buy none of those , they still affect the integrity and content of any of your game !
Whatever you decide , it's still often content you already paid that was removed .

PS : while we are mentioning good dlcs , i'd nominated those from burnout paradise too . At least criterion gave us massive amount of freebies and a complete new game within the game : bikes .

And in the same vein , Wipeout HD Fury

@5 I agree with Cullen. Lost and the Damned was the best DLC. With Fallout for me its been hit and Miss, Mother Zeta was my favorite DLC of that game.

There is only one game that I can think of that has great consistant DLC this gen: Grand Theft Auto IV.

The Lost and Damned was brilliant and, while not out yet for another month and a half, The Ballad of Gay Tony is shaping to be probably the finest piece of DLC ever imo.

Of course, there is Fallout 3, but you could argue over that.

I can't think of a game, where I'd what DLC.

I reckon most people like us Syrok won't enjoy DLC, but our children will.

Just got to learn to love whats good about it.

I'm not sure actually. The main thing I dislike is game producer announcing DLC before they even released the game. Makes it look to me like they could have just included it in the game.
And I don't like the amount of money some charge for tiny things like a new shirt/costumes/stickers.

Hmm, thinking about it I don't hate DLC I just find it largely useless for the consumers or overpriced. In both cases "You don't have to buy it" comments are perfectly valid.
