RAGE on 360 may have separate discs for multiplayer and single-player

rage22

id Software president Todd Hollenshead has told Shack that the firm may put the single-player and multiplayer modes for the Xbox 360 version of RAGE on separate discs.

“We’ll probably have two DVDs for sure, and then the question is, will multiplayer be on a separate disc or not?” said Hollenshead “It makes no sense for a player to swap that disc in multiplayer, right? That’s fail. They have to keep one disc in during multiplayer, can you just put all the multiplayer content on one DVD?”

Still, the number of discs is not set in stone, according to Hollenshead, which brings us back to something John Carmack  told Game Informer back in July:  RAGE on 3 DVD’s is a problem as the nature of the game won’t really allow for it.

Hmmmm.

Would that be a problem for the 360 version?
Multi player on a separate disc would appear to be the best option.

If this sort of thing becomes a trend then Microsoft are going to have to put some serious thought into adopting a higher capacity optical format.

I guess it depends on how it’s implemented, which is what the article is about. I certainly didn’t have any issue disc swapping my way through the PS1 era, but I’m not sure it’s really something that people want to do. Maybe offer and optional install that isn’t just a disc clone, but a single file for all the discs.

this is the trend. the games are getting more content in high definition … are seeing the end of the DVD media for games … who choice the dvd for new generation is in the past!

I don’t think it’s a big deal at all to have multiple discs.. besides, you can always save them to your HD to prevent disc swapping.. so it’s an irrelevant thing. If you don’t have a HD, then your not the type of gamer that matters :)

@5, It’s not much of an issue for us, but it can be a nightmare for the developers, and considering it doesn’t actually have to be an issue given the technologies available, the devs might put a bit of pressure on MS to do something about it.

Ahh the advantages of blu-ray are starting to shine…

“That’s fail.”

Indeed, Todd. Epic fail, indeed.

Devs can put all the pessure they want on MS, for the 360 its to late to change optical format.

@9, Microsoft mentioned the possibility of an HD-DVD expansion drive before the format nose-dived, don’t see why they couldn’t develop something for another format.

If it’s not too late for a Natal Sku it’s not too late for this.

I heard last night that Forza’s disc 2 is going to be “dlc”. Sounds as though you’ll have to install a great deal of content from disc 2 and play the game from disc 1. At least thats what it sounds like to me.

“Microsoft mentioned the possibility of an HD-DVD expansion drive before the format nose-dived”

No, they really didn’t. They were very clear all along that it’d never be used for games.

@12, the point is that such a device is possible, and if that one was never intended for games it doesn’t mean another wouldn’t be.

So if that were to happen i’d be forced to buy a 100€ or more add-on to play the latest 360 games or a whole new SKU? Sorry but it would be a commercial failure.

Not to mention the fact that there’s not a single developer that would make use of it. Not even id. It wouldn’t have the userbase.

When it all comes down to it though, we’re talking about swapping discs around… it’s not like the game isn’t coming out because they can’t get it on DVDs.

Nice. It’s better than PS3′s low framerate anyway.

“Ahh the advantages of blu-ray are starting to shine…”

You mean the advantage which no one has disputed ever in the history of this generation? :P

This was my biggest fear all along, a storage format never really manages to tackle two generations. Blu-ray was underdeveloped for the PS3 though, it really needs to be about 2x or even 3x faster than it is to be a proper streaming media. They both have their flaws, unfortunately for gamers.

i´d prefer a seperate mulitpalyer disc over changing discs while playing the campaign. no problem with a seperate multiplayer disc at all.

I prefer disk changing with a few games, rather than mandatory HD installs any day. I love picking up old random games from time to time, and having to reinstall it just to temporary visit an old game would suck.
The blu-ray storage is great, but its tempered with the slow access times it was stuck with.

swapping discs is no big deal but I’d rather not swap discs if it can be helped.

Killzone 2 streams from the Blu Ray, has no install and looks stunning with a constant high frame rate and awesome audio. Just wanted to throw that out there.

Surely you just do… install the MP disc if you want/can and then be able to keep the SP disc and play MP. Or if you don’t install it, you have to swap to the MP disc.

@23
That’s exactly how it should be, if you have the Storage, you can install it and it will automatically have the Multiplayer section as a menu selection and take a few seconds to load it *CoD: Black Ops style*

If not then you just simply put the Multiplayer disc in and it’s there :D
