nintendologo

Nintendo’s just released a nasty set of Q1 financials, showing a 40.1 percent drop in overall sales and a 60.6 percent drop in profits for the three months ending June 30.

Net income was down to ¥42 billion compared to ¥107 billion in Q1 2009. Sales fell to ¥253 billion from ¥423 billion a year ago.

Wii sales crashed from 5.17 million units in the first quarter last year to 2.23 million this year.

DS sales fell from 6.94 million to 5.97 million year-on-year. DSi made up 3.65 million of the total figure.

Of course, even with the drop they’re still crushing the competition.

SONY Q1 1.1m units
Nintendo Q1 223k units

Eh? These must be for different regions surely?
Either that or they have different year ends with Sony being 31/12 (Crimbo) and Nintendo 31/03.

I was in the pub last night till 2 so I could be missing something very simple

If Nintendo are feeling the pinch, what chance does everyone else have?

Is it global. If you look at the full thing, it breaks the sales down by territory on page nine. Basically, Wii and DS sales have almost stopped in Japan.

So this story after the Sony sales crash story – but what about Microsoft?

You’re reading the financials incorrectly Pat (I don’t blame you, they’re a nightmare, worst in the business).

The shipments are in 10s of thousands. So…

Wii = 223 x 10000 = 2.23m
DS = 597 x 10000 = 5.97m

That would make more sense

I cant access Nintendo’s site at work but 2.23m Wii’s v 1.1m PS3′s sounds more like it.

Yeah, I really, really hate how Nintendo presents their figures. All over the place.

Blimey, Wii sales really fell apart comparatively speaking. If they weren’t still kicking the shit out of everyone else they might actually be concerned.

I’m not surprised Wii sales have declined, I’m surprised Nintendo haven’t yet and don’t appear to be doing anything about it.

Wii Sports Resort is going to sell tons but surely it’s ability to push hardware is only incrementally higher than the original Wii Sports.

Wii+ / WiiHD next year earlier than planned?

“Wii+ / WiiHD next year earlier than planned?”

The only reason they’d do it so early is if they wanted to maintain their sales advantage… so maybe. No real need to until the Wii drops to PS3 / 360 sales levels though.

While DS has only had a relatively small drop, I’ll be interested to see its momentum in the next two quarters given the rise of the iPhone as a genuine gaming alternative. I don’t think the PSPGo will impact DS sales, but Apple’s device might.

The other thing to note is that Nintendo is still making a profit on every Wii sold. While its profits have been seriously hit, it won’t be panic stations just yet. And everyone’s feeling the pinch at the moment. What will probably be of greater concern is that Nintendo hasn’t really found the new Wii Fit or Brain Training yet. Everything since has failed to recapture that kind of impact – Wii Music didn’t do it, and Animal Crossing Wii was far less popular than the DS version. The previous year, Wii Fit was boosting Wii sales to artificially high figures, hence the vast difference.

Could be that you are just an uneducated westener demanding that the entire world do things your way.

I know that the chinese have a unit that is 10 000. So for them saying twohundredthousand is as conusing as them saying twentytenthousands to us. Since the Japanese have stolen most of their language and culture from China there might be a possablility that they also do things in tens of thousands.

It was more their entire financial report than just that one figure. There’s a world of difference between theirs and Sony’s for instance.
