Epic’s Mark Rein says making games for Wii would spread recourses too thin [Update]

Mark Rein has said that despite having over 50 million users, Epic won’t be making games for Wii any time soon.

According to his interview with IndustryGamers that has been quoted to death, the firm would have to scale down Unreal to even try to accomplish such a feat. Therefore, it’s just not worth it.

“If you stretch something too thin, it becomes very thin,” he said. “How do you support that? We don’t make games for that platform because we don’t see a market for the kinds of games we make – let’s be honest.

He goes on to say that if Nintendo came out with a system with more processing capabilities, it might be a go, but at present, developers that have tried to simplify games for the console have garnered nothing but flops.

More over on Silicon Valley Insider.

Update: Mark Rein has contacted VG247 and explained that the article on SVI misquoted his response to questions regarding Wii with IndustryGamers. We have posted our conversation with him here.

Man who is employed by the company who makes the most popular ‘current-generation’ engine, thinks creating games on previous generation hardware is a waste.

Yeah no one needed to spell it out like I did, but it was my way of saying, I agree Pheonix.

Bit of a naughty headline, that – makes it sound as if he’s talking about games in general, rather than those of Epic…

Considering the sales for The Conduit and MadWorld haven’t been that great, he’s got a point.

@SunKing – A conveniently trotted-out argument that ignores the ‘hardcore’ Wii games which HAVE sold well, and the not-inconsiderable fact that Wii games are much cheaper to make than their HD counterparts.

If these games just don’t sell, why is No More Heroes – a niche title by any reasonable criteria – getting a bigger-budget sequel exclusive to Wii?

And yeah, his point is that Epic isn’t interested in making games for the console, not that others shouldn’t. And given that his team is behind the most widely-used game engine on the HD consoles, he’s hardly talking from a position of neutrality, is he? I’m sure if Epic WAS able to make Unreal Engine 3 work on Wii, he wouldn’t be saying the same thing.

No More Heroes sold alright considering its niche appeal, and I’m not going to deny that. The fact is, though, that the Wii console is angling towards a family-friendly market; Epic’s games are not that. It’s not a criticism, but an observation. I’m unsure of how many “hardcore” Wii games have sold well (perhaps you could enlighten me?) but I’ve had the impression that you’re actually taking more of a risk making a risque game for the Wii than on the PS3 and Xbox 360. The audience is significantly different for there to be a worry that the game won’t sell.

Maybe if Epic could feasibly fit the UT3 engine onto the Wii they’d change their tune. It’s possible, but it’s not necessarily something I’d expect to happen.

I like how people get offended if you speak the truth.

Oh wait, no I don’t, it’s fucking retarded.

Wii has a fragmented userbase, leaning towards the casual end of the scale. If you make a game for the Wii, who are you aiming it towards? It’s very difficult for developers. Why make a “hardcore” game on the Wii when you have just as big of a userbase on the other two consoles? The Wii hardcore market is miniscule compared to PS360.
