Charts and data show the rise in XBLA prices since system launch

xblalogo

According to a report over on Kotaku, the average price of Xbox Live Arcade games has risen by a $1.74 since November of 2005.

Studying the launch prices of over 200 titles made available on the service, the average price for downloadable games has risen steadily in the past 46 months. Average price during the first month on the market in 2005 was under 600 MS Points ($7.31) and as of last week prices have gone to 700 MS Points ($9.05).

Games being released during Xbox’s Summer of Arcade will raise that average a bit, according to data, with four of the five offerings costing 1200 MS Points ($14.99).

A chart showing popular titles released for 400 MS Points ($5) suggest that the days of cheapness are nearly over with 1200 becoming the new magic number.

Looks like the whole world is just getting more expensive every day.

More data and some pretty charts are over on Kotaku.

“Looks like the whole world is just getting more expensive every day”

It’s called inflation.

On topic, I’m not sure how well this comparison really works. We certainly didn’t have games like BF1943 back in the early days of the service… in fact, most of what we had were shitty ports of ancient games rather than new releases. Check some of the games that were released in 2005 / 2006 as an example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_Live_Arcade_games

Looks like they did not have to look for many places to find info for their charts ;-)

I agree with you Psycho, tbh, I have had four 360′s since launch and until last year never had the desire to download a game from XBLA.

I agree with Psycho, early xbla games were not the quality we are getting now.
The problem is price though, while Battlefield 1943 may be worth $15, most games are not, and MS needs to have sales or discounts on games that arent selling as well.
I was glad to see Worms 2 wasnt $15, though its leaps and bounds better than Worms at $10.

I wish more companies would take a stab at porting older pc titles to the 360, like Lucasarts did with monkey island.

Psychotext makes a good point. If you consider the quality of some of those games compared to their prices, I don’t think you could ever really say that the prices were ever that low for what you were getting.

The prices may have gone up, but as Psychotext pointed out, so has the quality. 800 or 1200 is not an unreasonable price to pay for the many quality titles on the service.

Heck, I considered 800 points for The Secret of Monkey Island to be a complete steal!

@Psycho..Inflation is GREAT!! If Wages Match Inflation…Jul 20, 2009 … The inflation-adjusted value of the minimum wage is 17% lower in 2009 than it was in 1968…So Economics 101…When Wages don’t match Inflation, it is G R E E D!! So dollar for dollar they don’t match! You should give a dollar and get a dollars worth! Instead you are give $1.00 and getting about .80cents worth…that is not sustainable and eventually will cause the collapse of human nature as we know it and the Great Green Horny toads of the Massive Swamp of Desire will over take us all…wait! :)

If your wages don’t match inflation, get a better job… or do better at the one you have. :P

I like the toad idea though.
