Mark Rein: New Unreal Engine features “will blow people away”

Epic boss Mark Rein sat down with VG247 at Develop in Brighton, England last week to chat about the firm’s Unreal Engine. Rein revealed that the engine behind APB (and many others) is due for an update and the new features “will blow people away.”
“It’s a very mature engine and we’re adding great new features every year,” said Rein.
“I just saw some incredible new stuff that we’re either later this year or next year for new engine features and I think they’re really going to blow people away.”
Rein said earlier that if they a had an engine incremental numeration system, “we’d be at about 3.8 right now.”

I wonder if they’ll add proper ambient weather effects and proper light flooding, instead of you know, cheating with it. Real time environment shadows/lighting FTW.

Thats awesome Mark.
Maybe you will include a feature that makes it so developers get electric shocks everytime they make a game that has the same look as gears of War.
I’m getting tired of that “Unreal engine 3″ look. Developers can opt to not use it, but alot of them do, and it’s getting old fast.

Mark you are a PC gamer, make Cliffy wanting to port Gears 2 on the PC. Or you sold your soul too?

lets see 1 million per license your engine. Yeah I would sell to whoever bought it too.

make Cliffy wanting to port Gears 2 on the PC.
I doubt Cliff Bleszinski makes that kind of decisions at Epic. Mark Rein and Mike Capps are more likely to have decided that, the reasons probably are the fact that the PC port of Gears 1 was technicly a joke, and probably also the money they received from Microsoft to make Gears 2 only on Xbox 360.
(Because these days, the strategy heads at Microsoft have forgotten that they make Windows too, and that they have competition. Things called Linux and Mac)

the only decent implementation ,imho, of UE3 outside of epic is Mirrors Edge so i suppose if you pick the artstyle right this engine can shine

Like or dislike the game, you’d probably be hard pressed to tell that Lost Odyssey ran on UE3.

Sadly it’s not a great example because of how it ran.
