Man, you'd think E.A. would have learned by now.

Spore came out with a draconian DRM system, and became the most pirated game of all time. A few months later, The Sims 4 smashed that record.

Who wants to bet this is going to end up doing just as well on the pirate "market"? I have to be connected to the internet just to play my game? Fuck that.

I'm pretty much done with the C&C series now, but if it were play-to-play? Count me doubly-done.

Pay to play maybe? I know from my time at EA, they were trying to figure out new ways to get extra cash from the boxed product.

They tested the water with Bad company and look how the idea of buying weapons bombed. And now they are trying it with heroes.

Its a model they use in Asia alot and appears to work. The game is free but additional items are extra.

I am extremely skeptical that this is something that couldn't have been done without an always-on internet connection.

The most hardcore of hardcore PC gamers like their gaming machine to remain unconnected from the internet so they don't have to deal with resource hogging firewalls and AV and to protect their babies from internet nasties.

They won't like this, and they're the type of people who play this particular breed of boring-ass game.

You might be fine with it, but what about our friends in the armed forces who want to play video games during their downtime but don't have an internet connection? I believe that was the complaint which toppled the 9 day DRM fiasco on Mass Effect.

That's a lot of words to justify the required internet connection for a single-player game, when everyone knows it's an anti-piracy measure. I'm fine with it, though, as I prefer this approach much to any other disc-based or rootkit-based DRM approach.
